Methods of assessment for course overall: 80% coursework

Year 1
  • What is education?
    An introduction to key concepts in education studies contextualised within the disciplines of philosophy, sociology and history.
  • Study skills
    This module equips you with the study skills you will need to study at HE level
  • The relationship between psychology and education
    Reflects on implications for practice and lays the foundations for the 'Introduction to Social and Developmental Cognition' module.
  • Constructing childhood
    A focus on media portrayals of children and childhood, including notions of the 'othered' child, exclusion and stereotyping.
  • Community family and children
    Building on themes introduced in the 'Constructing childhood' module, the focus will be on considerations of social capital, youth culture and transitions.
  • Language, literacy and learning
    An exploration of the theories and practice around how children become effective readers, writers and users of language. This module will include a reading placement in a local school or early years setting.
Year 2
  • Developing mathematical thinking
    A theorised, developmental problem solving approach to understanding mathematical thinking and how learning in mathematics is supported.
  • Introduction to social and developmental cognition
    This module provides an introduction to atypical child development which lays the foundation to other modules including 'Barriers to learning'
  • Interpersonal interactions
    Progressing beyond the 'introduction to social and developmental cognition' module, you'll explore peer and family relationships, friendships, social capital and bullying.
  • Alternative education setting placement
    In this module you prepare for a placement in a non-main stream educational setting. This could be a special needs school, museum, prison, hospital school etc. The placement is for eight weeks and you'll develop practical skills and understanding whilst applying theory you have already been studying to an educational context.
  • Barriers to learning
    Building on a range of previous modules the focus will be on identifying and reducing barriers for individual learners.
  • Equality, culture and citizenship
    An exploration of the individual as a citizen within the context of social justice.
Year 3
  • Project
    In the third year you'll have the opportunity to design a work-based study which will develop your ability to reflect on how theory is applied to practice in your own teaching in a new educational context which is different from your everyday workplace.
  • Applied personality, intelligence and testing
    Understand and apply information from assessments carried out by Educational Psychologists.
  • Creativity in education
    Reflections on curriculum will help you to understand how you and children develop creative approaches to learning.
  • Applied assessment for learning
    Develop your knowledge and critical understanding of issues relating to Assessment for Learning (AfL) with specific relevance to the contribution that formative assessment can make to improving teaching and learning and raising standards of attainment.
  • Contextualising education globally
    Building on the year one module 'What is Education?' you'll explore and compare aspects of policy, practice and curriculum across the world and develop an understanding of global concerns.
