The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Program in Educational Studies is offered jointly by three respected Nova Scotia universities: Acadia University (Wolfville, Nova Scotia); Mount Saint Vincent University (Halifax, Nova Scotia); and, St. Francis Xavier University (Antigonish, Nova Scotia).

Working in one of six supported thematic areas, students in the program complete 2.5 credits of coursework, an academic portfolio, and a doctoral dissertation. Normally, students complete the program in 4 to 6 years of study.

Using a range of state-of-the-art program delivery modes, the Nova Scotia Inter-University PhD Program provides access to students of advanced standing to an exciting and high-quality PhD learning experience.

Course programme

Program Description

With access to the collective scholarly resources of three respected Nova Scotia universities, students in the program obtain substantial knowledge of foundational and contemporary educational research. Students also acquire theoretical and methodological expertise to develop their own research topic.

In the first year of their program, students study full-time, taking a rigorous series of courses and preparing a comprehensive scholarly portfolio. In subsequent years, candidates conduct research leading to the completion of their doctoral dissertation.

Although they have six years to complete, normally, students will complete their doctoral program in about four years.

International differential will be a matching amount for each scenario, i.e. a first/second year international student would pay $20,910 CAD, and a continuing international student would pay $5,968 CAD.
