Our English as a Foreign Language Courses are for students who are 16 and over and want to improve their general English language skills, to develop confidence in speaking, to improve their writing skills, to develop language learning techniques and strategies and to prepare for Cambridge English Exams.
What qualifications or experience do I need ?Our courses are available for beginners (A2 CEFR.) to advanced level learners (C1/C2CEFR.) We will test you to make sure you a placed in the right class.
What will I study ?The main structures of the language with confidence and fluency. Communication for a variety of social situations using strategies for authentic speech. A wide range of vocabulary and use of language. Effective learning strategies. A variety of writing tasks that show awareness of target reader and register. A variety of reading and listening strategies to develop understanding and communication. Organisation of writing tasks and expression on ideas with a high level of accuracy. All aspects of the Cambridge English Certificate in Advanced English
How will I be assessed ?All students will be given homework to do every week including writing tasks. You will also be given tests to assess your progress.
What qualifications could I achieve ?All students will receive a Barnet and Southgate College Certificate of attendance at level C1 CEFR. You can take a Cambridge English exam at level C1 CEFR in December, March or June.

Will I need an interview ?You can be assessed at Southgate Campus Mon - Fri. 10.00 - 12.00 The test usually takes 1 hour. If you not able to come for an assessment we can send you the assessment test to complete and return.
Any extra costs for equipment/materials ?You will need to buy a course book to support your learning which are approximately £30.00. You are expected to bring a file and notebook to all your classes. If you choose to do an exam you will need to pay for your exam £55 - £95.00 dependent on level.
