The Level 6 Nutritional Therapy Diploma Course - DipION (NTDC) combines the latest theoretical knowledge from the science of nutrition with “real-world” clinical training to help you build an in-depth understanding of the role that nutrition plays in relation to human health and wellbeing.

About this course

Our flexible course nurtures students through each subject in a way which makes it meaningful, building your confidence and enabling you to develop your critical thinking, analytical ability and communication skills, ready for your next step into professional practice.

Level 3 education attainment: two GCE/VCE A Levels including one related science subject (Biology, Chemistry, Physiology, Home Economics) or equivalent (e.g. International Baccalaureate, Scottish Advanced Highers, Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma, Irish Leaving Certificate, BTEC Diploma awards). Level 2 Maths and English at a minimum of Grade C is also required.

Fully accredited by NTEC, so that successful completion enables you to become a BANT registered Nutritional Therapist and apply for Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) registration.

Course programme

The NTDC provides the knowledge, skills and clinical experience that you need for a career in nutrition.

The Nutritional Therapy Diploma Course - DipION (NTDC) is a level six, modular course. Each module is a distinct learning unit and is assessed individually. There are various types of assessment for each module, including: essays, exams, research critiques, case studies and assessed consultations.

Year One

The course first equips you with a comprehensive knowledge of the principles and philosophy of practice, components of food and their roles in human biochemistry and physiology, dietary analysis and menu-planning.

This is the foundation year of the course and underpins all future learning.

Nutrition Sciences 1

Biochemistry, physiology and internal anatomy | Introduction to the systems approach and using the Functional Medicine model | Role of nutrition science in an integrated approach to health | Introduction to academic literacy and academic integrity skills

Principles of Nutrition

An introduction to philosophies, principles and standards underpinning nutritional therapy practice | Food composition | Factors affecting food choice | Factors influencing the nutritional value of foods for individuals, throughout the life cycle | Dietary models | An introduction to reflective practice, and personal learning planning (PLP) | Developing academic integrity, and academic literacy skills

Year Two

In the second year of the course, the focus moves on to exploring underlying biochemical imbalances, diseases and conditions and the impact of nutrition.

You will begin to learn about functional tests, therapeutic foods, nutraceuticals, drug nutrient interactions and how to work effectively with clients therapeutically.

Year Three

The final year considers more advanced health issues, specialist and complex aspects of practice, understanding your boundaries as a professional practitioner, and researching, planning and reflecting on how you propose to develop a successful career or business in nutritional therapy.

There is also a more in-depth study of the therapeutic relationship, using functional testing and personalising management plans. The emphasis is on nutritional theory, underpinned by research and translated into good clinical practice.

A critical exploration of nutritional therapeutic approaches to complex and boundaried health conditions | Using critical appraisal of research to stay ahead in a rapidly changing field

Functional & Diagnostic Testing

A critical understanding of laboratory tests available to Nutritional Therapists to determine selection of laboratories and test(s) | Interpretation of test results used in specific clinical situations

Practice Management
