What's it all about?:
The demand for electrical engineers with specialist knowledge in renewable energy outstrips supply. Our foundation degree is very practical and is the only one in Europe which incorporates a City & Guilds electrician award, taught within a workshop environment. You will walk away with a comprehensive array of expertise where you will be able to tackle a career in this exciting and emerging industry. Graduates would ultimately expect to gain national JIB approval and become leaders in this field.

Progression:
This foundation degree gives you the opportunity to progress to the second year of a BSc (Hons) degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or a distance learning PGDip/MSc in Architecture: Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies at the Univerisity of East London or to immediately follow a career in industry.

In our experience in order to be successful on this level of course you will need one of the following:

• an NVQ Level 3 in a related subject
• equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.
Duration: Two years Course Overview
What does the course involve?:
The course includes the following modules:
• electrical installation engineering (with City & Guilds 2330)
• electrical design and standby power systems (with CAD experience)
• electrical power engineering (with direct access to C & G 2392 inspection and testing award)
• a choice of power electronics or control systems
• renewable energy principles (including 17th Edition IEE wiring regulations)
• renewable energy systems
• sustainability and business management.
Embedded within the course are specialist modules in the design and operation renewable energy systems including Photovoltaic, wind turbines and hydro-electric. You will also learn to design electrical installations using CAD software, inspect and test electrical systems including motor and generator plant, apply industrial power electronics and use advanced test equipment.

Case Studies
I enjoyed the class as it has given me a greater insight into my field of work, and allowed me to gain practical experience - the workshop facilities at the College are great.
The course was challenging but enjoyable. It provided me with a good introduction to my industry, and the opportunity to benefit from other students experiences through class discussions.
The course was well taught and broad, which meant that I learnt a variety of topics for my course area. The College has great facilities including the computers, libraries and innovation centre.
