This programme is a major electrical engineering degree programme in Hong Kong that provides unique and up-to-date education in the interesting field of electrical power and energy.

The curriculum is designed to give a balanced treatment of university core requirement, electrical engineering fundamentals, advanced and specialist topics, and non-technical subjects such as economics and management.

Engineering practice is an integrated component of the curriculum. Student learning is supplemented by a variety of laboratory, training and project activities. Students also develop good presentation and problem-solving skills through mini-projects and final-year projects. Students are required to take the Work-Integrated Education (WIE) component, which may be in the form of summer training or industrial attachment.

Students can also participate in exchange programmes and spend a semester in an overseas university. Up till now, we have a number of students who have participated in exchange programmes with institutions including the University of Technology Sydney, the Catholic University of America, the National University of Singapore, the Technical University of Denmark and the University of Western Australia.

Seminars, industry visits and overseas study tours are also organised to broaden students' horizons.

About this course

This programme provides in-depth coverage of electrical engineering according to an outcome-based education philosophy. The programme aims to produce engineers who are able to practise their professions in the broad area of electrical engineering which includes, but is not limited to, electrical power systems, energy conversion and utilisation, transportation systems, environmental protection, control, computer and fibre-optic applications.

A modern electrical engineer should possess a broad-based education and adequate specialist knowledge to undertake high-level work in design, planning, supervision and manufacturing. The programme thus places emphasis on the mastery of fundamental principles and application of the latest engineering technology. Of equal importance is the training of leadership, entrepreneurship, and communication skills.

We encourage life-long learning so that graduates can keep abreast of new developments in engineering and technology.

Professional Recognition

The programme has been granted full accreditation by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).

Career Prospects

Our graduates have numerous employment opportunities in engineering planning and design, manufacturing, installation, maintenance and servicing, engineering sales and research.

Graduates are able to develop rewarding careers in major utility and transportation companies such as CLP Power Hong Kong Limited, the Hongkong Electric Company and the Mass Transit Railway Corporation. They are also employed by engineering consultant firms, contractor companies, international engineering enterprises, electrical product manufacturers and the Government of the HKSAR (the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, the Water Supplies Department, the Drainage Department and others).

Course programme

  • Students complete a first year of fundamental studies in common with students within the Engineering Broad Discipline. The Year One curriculum focuses on the underpinning subjects (such as Physics and Mathematics), languages, information technology, etc.
  • The Year Two curriculum focuses on the fundamentals of engineering science, engineering mathematics, computing, and introductory studies of electrical engineering.
  • In Year Three, students follow a semi-structured study pattern by taking compulsory core subjects in electrical engineering and Elective Subjects. The focus is on consolidating the fundamentals, team work and experimental methods. Besides, discipline-specific language subjects are studied.
  • Students take the advanced Core Subjects and Elective Subjects together with their Final Year Projects. Final Year Projects provide a comprehensive learning experience in engineering technology, problem-solving techniques, communication skills (both written and verbal) and creative thinking. Depending on their career aspirations and specialisation, students can choose from a list of technical and non-technical Electives to complement their knowledge in different areas of electrical engineering.
