The Doctorate of Education in Elementary Education program offers advanced development for public school professionals and others who seek leadership roles and want to provide a greater service to their profession.

This program includes a theoretical base as well as a research design and methodology component, preparing you not only for understanding best practices but being able to evaluate and test hypotheses about what works in education.

About this course

EDPS 640 Methodology of Educational and Psychological Research, or its equivalent, is a prerequisite for the doctoral program. Graduate students who enter without this credit, must meet the requirement as a deficiency rather than as part of the program.

Course Requirements

The doctorate program consists of 90 credit hours.
Doctorate of Education candidates must complete at least 15 credits in one calendar year to meet the residency requirement. These courses may be on campus or online.

Areas of Specialization

Doctorate of education candidates select one of the three following areas of specialization:
  • Elementary

Candidates' doctoral committees will determine 40 credits of courses, which must include:
  • 10 credits - dissertation
  • 4 credits - doctoral seminar (EDEL 798, EDEL 799, or EDRD 700)
  • 3 credits - research (EDEL 740, EDRD 770, EDEL 791)
Cognate Areas

EdD candidates will complete one of the following:
  • one 24-credit cognate
  • two 15-credit cognates
Students determine courses for their cognates with their doctoral committees.

EdD candidates who pursue the research cognate must meet the following requirements:
  • a minimum of two quantitative research courses
  • a minimum of two qualitative research courses
  • additional research courses approved by the committee
