If you have an interest in a wide range of natural, man-made or terrorist incidents and disasters, and want to help improve the responses and recovery and/or humanitarian support following such events, then this course is for you.

This new degree course presents a global perspective on emergency and disaster management enabling you to appreciate the diverse ways in which disruptive events may happen and are subsequently managed in different countries.

Alternatively, you may also be eligible if you already work within an emergency responder organisation, a voluntary, commercial or private organisation which has a role in supporting those organisations during an emergency or which delivers its own emergency or business continuity functions. Such students should be working in, or aspiring to work within, the field of emergency planning or business continuity.

About this course

At the end of the course you will be able too:

Effectively plan and co-ordinate your learning through the production of a comprehensive Personal Development Plan by engaging in self-managed and reflective learning
Develop a critical understanding of the theories and concepts that underpin the management of emergencies and disasters.
Understand and apply the principles of management and organisational behaviour to complex (response) organisations in both the steady state and crisis situations
Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of organisations, leadership, team building and other concepts to assist the development of resilient organisations and structures needed for effective emergency and disaster response
Understand the need for sound decision making and communication strategies in emergency and disaster situations
Develop quantitative, qualitative, presentational, communication, IT and other transferable skills for application in the workplace environment and demonstrate an ability to research, initiate and complete an independent piece of work
Support the future development of and improvement of best practice within employing organisations engaged in emergency and disaster management

BTEC QCF Extended Diploma at grade DMM / BTEC QCF Diploma at grade D*D*
Access to HE Diploma Full award (60 credits) of which a minimum of 45 must be at Level 3 with at least 30 of these Level 3 credits at Merit..

Course programme

The course will:

  • Provide a global perspective on emergency and disaster management
  • Facilitate intellectual development and independent learning by providing access to career-related cognitive and interpersonal skills and developing of a range of transferable skills.
  • Create a dynamic learning environment where students have the opportunity to share their experiences and work with each other which facilitates enhanced communication, team working, leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Allow students to effectively plan and co-ordinate their own learning through the production of a comprehensive Personal Development Plan (PDP). The PDP includes personal analysis of the learner’s current academic strengths and weaknesses and a statement of their career plans and objectives.
  • Offer the opportunity to develop an understanding of the contribution that research can make to improve emergency and disaster management practice, resilience, and support the development of good practice within organisations engaged with civil protection.
  • Allow students to research, plan and implement a work-based project.
