This course is aimed at staff working in emergency care settings such as minor injury units, urgent care centres, emergency departments, the ambulance service, NHS walk in centres and General Practice.

They will find the emergency care programme at the University of Wolverhampton relevant and stimulating.

Courses can be tailored to the needs of the individual student.

Staff working in primary care settings may find the content relevant either as stand alone modules or as options within a degree programme.

About this course

At the end of this course you will be able to:-
Critically reflect on professional expertise, clinical judgement and ethical decision-making skills used in the collaborative provision of healthcare in the multicultural setting.
Critically appraise the research underpinning practice and modern healthcare and apply knowledge in an enterprising way (including the use of advanced technologies appropriate to the role).
Apply skills in physical examination, history taking and appropriate documentation to lead on the delivery of holistic, patient focused assessment of need in traumatic injury and undifferentiated illness in both the adult and the child and differentiate between a range of complex conditions.
Collate evidence gained during clinical examination, order appropriate investigations arrive at a working diagnosis and justify an individualised plan of care.
Utilise a sound evidence base for practice and advanced diagnostic skills that enable safe and effective discharge or referral of patients with traumatic injury and undifferentiated illness.
Critically reflect on the role of the Emergency Practitioner as a role-model to provide guidance and support; to nurture your own and others intellectual curiosity in accordance with your Professional Code.

Registration with an appropriate professional body.
You must have 120 credits at level 4 (certificate) and 120 credits at level 5 (diploma or foundation degree). A completed BSc / BA degree or higher award cannot be considered for these credits as they have already been claimed.

This award is aimed at experienced staff with a sound understanding of the general principles of emergency and urgent care who are now ready to develop into a more independent role in practice. You must have 2 years post registration experience as a Health Professional.

Course programme

The full Hons degree is 6 modules. This includes 4 core modules, the research component of the award and 1 elective module such as the emergency care of the child, non-medical prescribing (V150), leadership or any other module of interest and relevance from the undergraduate prospectus.

The 4 core modules of the award are:

6HW067 Minor Injuries for Emergency Practitioners

6HW071 Theory into Practice for Minor Injuries Practitioners

6HW068 Minor Illnesses for Emergency Practitioners

6HW073 Theory into Practice for Minor Illnesses Practitioners.

These modules are worth 20 credits each.

When studied as stand alone modules or as an option within a degree programme 6HW067 and 6HW071 theory and practice modules must be studied together. This also applies to 6HW068 and 6HW073.
