Engineering BTEC National Award Level 3

About the course:
This is a technical one year programme covering a wide range of engineering and related topics and would be suitable for school leavers, apprentices with suitable qualification, or mature learners who want to gain a qualification to enter or further their career in engineering. This award programme comprises the first year of a National Certificate. The course is an ideal bridging programme for mature students in full time employment who want to study at HNC level but who have not studied on an engineering course at level 3 for some years.

Success Story:
As students gain a recognised qualification after one year some students may be fast tracked to the HNC programme providing they have suitable experience in engineering and previous qualifications.

Course Content:
The BTEC National Award in Engineering is a level 3 programme equivalent to one 'A' level and combines both academic and practical study covering a wide range of units. The Award consists of six units, some of which are: communications, health and safety and mathematics. Students elect whether to study on the following pathways, mechanical units studied are: Computer Aided Drawing (CAD), engineering materials and mechanical principles. Electrical Units studied are: electical principles, electronic principles and electrical applications. Other pathways for welding and fabrication and possibly marine may be offered subject to further discussion with the college.

Learning Style:
Students learn via the classroom to develope the underpinning knowledge and skills required to complete task sheets that test understanding. Practical demonstrations and experiments are also integral to the programme.

Equipment Requirements:
Usual stationary and a Scientific Calculator

Assessment:
The course is based on continual assessment, assignments being completed by the student throughout the course. Students are supported throughout the assessment process to help them achieve the different grading levels of either pass, merit or distinction.

Progression:
On satisfactory completion of the Award programme, most students will progress onto the 2nd year of BTEC National Certificate in either Mechanical or Electrical Engineering where they will study further engineering units or specific work related units such as pneumatics, hydraulics, 3 phase motors and drives. The BTEC programme can offer a wide range of possible units depending on the demand and requirements of employers and students.

Additional Information:
If you are unsure about your entry qualifications and suitablity for the course you can contact the college to speak to a member of staff who will be pleased to offer advice based on our experience of running a wide range of BTEC programmes from 1st Certificate to HNC courses across different engineering disiplines.
