About the course

This foundation diploma is aimed at students who have some experience of both mechanical and electrical/electronic engineering and are looking to gain a qualification that is equivalent to three A Levels. The course is split over two years, which means that if you choose to only complete the first year and pursue an Apprenticeship instead, you’ll still leave the College with a nationally recognised qualification.

You’ll benefit from a new, exciting BTEC syllabus which focuses on key subjects, such as;

maths and science
materials
electronics
project management
engineering design and production
control engineering (including programming languages)
computer aided design (CAD)
pnuematic and hydraulic systems and devices

If you progress to the second year of the course, you’ll be given the opportunity to increase your specialism in either electronics or mechanical engineering.

Course programme

What you'll learn

This course is primarily theory-based with practical experimentation, however some practical elements are included to give you a broad overview of manufacturing machines and principles. Engineering covers a wide range of roles and involves the application of scientific principles and practical knowledge to transform ideas and materials into products and systems. You’ll learn all about them on this course.

This course includes the following subjects:

Year One

  • engineering
  • the delivery of engineering processes safely as a team
  • engineering product design and manufacture
  • mechanical measurement and inspection technology
  • applied commercial and quality principles
  • pnuematic and hydraulic systems
  • programmable logic controllers.

Year Two

  • a specialist engineering project
  • using calculus to solve engineering problems
  • electronic devices and circuits
  • microcontroller systems for engineers
  • electrical machines
  • digital analogue electronic systems
  • maintenance of mechanical systems
  • mechanical behaviour of metallic materials.
