Programme Structure
The IFP in Engineering will provide a broad, analytical and practical understanding of relevant disciplines. Using an integrated approach, you will be introduced to three basic subject areas of engineering, mathematics, engineering science and information communications technology (ICT). The programme will expose you to a range of required
critical and evaluative skills, knowledge and understanding in appropriate science, ICT and engineering studies.
You will study five courses on this programme:
Engineering
In this course you will be introduced to the areas of mechanical and electrical engineering. The course will provide a range of transferable skills including time management and team working skills. You will gain practical experience of engineering design problems and their solutions as part of an understanding of the design process. You will study areas such as engineering materials and their properties, structures, electrical and electronic systems and
engineering design using computer aided technology. You will gain valuable experience of machine practices in a safe and secure environment.
Mathematics
This course will give you numerical knowledge in a range of mathematical activities and give you the confidence to develop problem solving skills. You will be able to transfer these skills to the other disciplines on the programme. Areas covered, amongst others, will include algebra, geometry, calculus, trigonometry and mechanics. Your mathematical
ability will develop during the course to be able to progress these skills at degree level.
Engineering Science
This course will develop your understanding and knowledge of physical concepts and principles, integrating an experimental approach. The course will allow you to apply theoretical knowledge in the design of experiments and practical work. Your observational skills will be tested through the Engineering interpretation of results and data. Areas of Engineering Science that will be covered include: mechanics, matter, energy and waves. You will gain an understanding of the social and technological applications of science.
Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
During this course you will be able to develop a level of competency that will allow you to apply IT skills within the current IFP and to be able to develop the IT skills for undergraduate study. A range of IT areas will be covered using appropriate software packages including databases, word-processing, spreadsheets, presentation and drawing and computer architecture. The course will have a natural link to the other subjects particularly developing the skills required for using engineering software. The four main subjects will be assessed through examinations and coursework.
English and Study Skills
This course will focus on the key aspect of developing your English language skills. In particular, the course focuses on academic English to develop your study skills in the classroom in preparation for undergraduate degree study at university. For example, you will undertake presentations to gain confidence in the classroom, always using relevant and
up-to-date materials and texts. You will be able to improve your IELTS score with a focused IELTS programme. The English course is assessed through both examinations and coursework.
