The Engineering International Foundation Year gives you the skills you need to start an Engineering degree if you do not currently have the necessary mathematics or science qualifications.
You will need an IELTs of 5.5 in English to study the programme.
Successful completion enables you to go onto the first year of any of the following BEng courses:
Chemical Engineering
Civil and Structural Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Biomedical Engineering
If you achieve a grade of 70% or above you are also able to progress directly to our four or five-year integrated Master’s programmes (MEng).
The Foundation Year gives you with a strong grounding in Engineering fundamentals of mathematics, physics and materials. You’ll get an overview of each Engineering area, enabling you to choose the right discipline for you.
You’ll learn theory and apply this knowledge in varied practical work. The curriculum is aligned with year one of our BEng programmes, ensuring a smooth transition to your degree level studies. You will also take an Academic Reading and Writing module which will strengthen your English, and is taught in a technical engineering context.

The programme is intended to prepare students with appropriate qualifications so that they can enter into Stage 1 of a CEng accredited Engineering programme.

Year 1

  • Foundation Mathematics 1 (20 credits) - core
    To develop the basic skills of algebra and geometry and to introduce the mathematics of engineering, provide students with an appreciation of the breadth of engineering and develop computing skills.
  • Foundation Mathematics 2 (20 credits) - core
    To develop the basic skills of algebra, geometry and trigonometry and to introduce the mathematics of engineering.
  • Foundation Mechanics (20 credits) - core
    To develop the basic skills of statics, kinematics and dynamics and apply them to engineering problems.
  • Foundation Physics (20 credits) - core
    To introduce electricity and magnetism as a basis for an Engineering Degree programme, and to provide a quantitative understanding of the many phenomena that waves and vibrations exhibit that will be needed in engineering courses.
  • Fundamentals of Materials (20 credits) - core
    To develop knowledge and understanding of the influence of material structure (from atomic through to microstructural) on the chemical and physical properties of materials.
  • Academic Reading and Writing (20 credits) - core
    This module will develop your reading and writing skills to the required standard (B2 level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) to enable you to cope with university study.

At the end of the programme, students will be eligible to exit with the award of Certificate of Foundation Studies if they have successfully completed 120 Level 3 QCF/NQF credits and achieved the specified learning outcomes.
