Engineering and manufacturing represents a large sector with operations occurring across a range of subsectors including aerospace, chemicals, construction, automotive, marine, nuclear, metals, minerals and materials. The UK chemicals sector alone has over 110,000 employees working to produce household products and medicines, whereas the automotive sector requires engineering and welding skilled workers to generate £59.3 billion for the UK economy each year. The UK is the European leader in aerospace technologies and engineering and has an estimated 3,000 companies working in the sector.Engineers are in demand in the UK – with two million engineering and welding-related vacancies predicted over the next few years. There is also a recognised national skills shortage in welding. Opportunities can be found with companies on a regional, national or even global level. As well as large companies that require engineering such as Airbus, BP or GlaxoSmithKline, the sector is also made up of many small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Possible future pathways could lead to careers as fabricator welders, multi-skilled maintenance engineers, joiners or service and commissioning engineers. The engineering and welding programmes at NHC develop your knowledge and know-how in the sector through an engaging mix of both technical lessons and hands-on practical experiences. You will advance your understanding of:You’ll be coached by tutors with industry experience at the state-of-the-art NHC Engineering & Construction Campus in Stevenage – a purpose-built unit which emulates an industrial environment. The campus has cutting-edge tools and technology from companies such as Weldability, who has provided a row of welding bays in which you can refine industry-standard welding skills. Weldability also provides industrial talks and factory visits to help learners deepen their understanding of the welding and fabrication sector.

The programme tutors are experts in their field. They will provide you with high-quality technical and practical lessons and advise you on work experience and career pathways.
Students get the opportunity to work in a real life engineering workshop through work experience and previous students have undertaken work experience at international crane manufacturer Liebherr. NHC, through our partner Hart Learning and Development, also offer a range of exciting traineeship and apprenticeship opportunities with companies such as Airbus.
- Engineering construction: this will be an introduction to engineering health and safety, preparation and quality control of welding projects, TIG / TAG / MMA welding for the engineering and construction industry and how to join plates in engineering construction by MIG / MAG welding.
- Welding and fabrication technology: this programme will develop your understanding of the principles, methods and technology involved in engineering maintenance. It will focus on the welding of thick plate, thin plate and sheet metal, covering manufacturing, engineering and cutting techniques and assembly of engineering components as well as engineering environmental awareness.
- Welding: you will develop skills in handling tungsten inert gas, metal inert gas, how to produce good weld joints, manual metal arc, oxy-acetylene, brazing, soldering as well as thermal and plasma cutting skills.
