Course programme

Year 1

You will develop your reading, writing and communication skills. You will read a wide range of extracts from 19th century fiction and 20th and 21st century non-fiction texts, and develop the skills to critically analyse, evaluate and make comparisons between texts. For writing, you will explore the language and style of a variety of text types, including imaginative writing, letters, articles, reports and travel writing. You will also develop the skills to present a short topic to the class. Please see the specification for Edexcel GCSE English Language (9-1) for further detail.

When you enrol, we will provide you with details of the books you will need to buy.

Additional information

There are two exams, with a reading and a writing section in each. Paper 1: 19th Century Fiction and imaginative writing. Paper 2: 20th and 21st Century Non-Fiction and transactional (non-fiction) writing. The reading sections of the papers will contain extracts of texts that you will not have seen before. You will also need to complete an assessment of speaking and listening skills, usually through a 10 minute presentation. The exams will be in early June on dates set nationally and will be held at Abbey Park Campus.
