English Language and Literature A Level Course This distance learning A Level English Language and Literature course has been designed to the latest specifications. The first available exam dates for this version of the Pearson Edexcel English Language and Literature A Level are in June 2017.  English Language and Literature is a great 'combination' A Level which allows students to learn about both the literary and linguistic aspects of English. English is considered a core subject, and the skills that students can gain from studying it are highly prized by universities and prospective employers. Critical analysis, creativity, independent research techniques, in-depth reading comprehension: all of these skills are developed and honed through the study of English Language and Literature, and through this Pearson Edexcel A Level course. In accordance with the latest specifications, this course has been designed to encourage students to: Develop and apply their knowledge of literary analysis and evaluation Develop and apply their understanding of the concepts and methods appropriate for the analysis and study of language Use linguistic and literary approaches in their reading and interpretation of texts, showing how the two disciplines can relate to each other Engage creatively and critically with a wide range of texts Explore the ways in which texts relate to each other and the contexts in which they are produced and received Develop their skills as producers and interpreters of language Undertake independent and sustained studies to develop their skills as producers and interpreters of language.

Syllabus

The Pearson Edexcel A Level specification is structured into three 'components', assessed across two examinations and one coursework assessment. For each of these components you will be required to read some pre-selected texts, which are listed below:

Component 1: Voices in Speech and Writing

  • Voices in Speech and Writing: An Anthology
  • Arthur Miller, All My Sons

Component 2: Varieties in Language and Literature

  • Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights
  • Angela Carter, The Bloody Chamber

Component 3: Coursework

For your coursework, you will study one fiction text and one non-fiction text. On this course you will study:

  • Oscar Wilde, The Importance of Being Earnest
  • Wendy Jones, Grayson Perry: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Girl

Pearson Edexcel A Level in English Language and Literature (9ELO)

In order to attain this qualification you must sit two examinations and submit a piece of coursework, details of which can be seen below. Booking exams is the responsibility of the student. Any and all exam fees will be paid by the student directly to their chosen exam centre. On purchasing the course we will provide students with a list of recommended exam centres.

Paper 1: Voices in Speech and Writing *Paper Code: 9ELO/01

This is a written examination consisting of two sections. This is an 'open book' examination, meaning that students can take a clean copy of the prescribed text into the exam.

Section A: Voices in the 20th-21st Century Texts

One comparative essay question on one unseen extract selected from 20th or 21st century sources and one text from the anthology.

Section B: Drama Texts

One extract-based essay from on the chosen drama text.

Details:

  • Exam Length: 2 hours and 30 minutes
  • Exam Weighting: 40% of the total qualification
  • Questions: There are eight questions - students must answer two.
  • Marks: 50 marks in total - 25 for each section

Paper 2: Varieties in Language and Literature *Paper Code: 9ELO/02

This is a written examination consisting of two sections. This is an 'open book' examination, meaning that students can take a clean copy of the prescribed text into the exam.

Section A: Unseen Prose Non-Fiction Texts

One essay question on an unseen prose non-fiction extract from a choice of four. The unseen extract is linked to the studied theme.

Section B: Drama Texts

One comparative essay question from a choice of four on one prose fiction anchor text and one other text from a theme.

Details:

  • Exam Length: 2 hours and 30 minutes
  • Exam Weighting: 40% of the total qualification
  • Questions: There are eight questions - students must answer two.
  • Marks: 50 marks in total - 20 for Section A and 30 for Section B

Coursework: Investigating and Creating Texts *Paper Code: 9ELO/03

The coursework component consists of two assignments. Your tutor will assist you with process of submitting your coursework to the exam centre.

Assignment 1:

Two pieces of original writing; one piece of fiction writing and one piece of creative non-fiction writing.

Assignment 2:

One analytical commentary reflecting on their studied texts and the two original writing pieces they have produced

Details:

  • Coursework Weighting: 20% of the total qualification
  • Marks: 60 marks in total - 36 for Assignment 1 and 24 for Assignment 2

Study Hours

This is only an approximate figure and is dependant upon how much time you can dedicate to your studies and how well you grasp the learning concepts in the course material. Furthermore, at the end of each lesson there is a question paper that needs to be completed and returned to your tutor. You should allow at least 1 - 2 hours of study to complete each question paper.

The approximate amount of time required to complete the course is: 300 hrs.
