This course gives you the chance to develop and further extend your combined interests in English language and literature. You will learn about the forms and functions of English and examine the use of language in its social and cultural context, while exploring a range of literary and non-literary texts from the Renaissance to the present day and from the West Indies to the West Midlands.
Throughout the programme, you will be given the theoretical, philosophical and contextual tools with which to critically examine the process of linguistic analysis and literary interpretation.
Upon completion you'll be able to make informed judgements about how linguistic structures and literary texts shape our existing social practices and notions of cultural capital.

About this course
At the end of this course you will be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of the forms and functions of English at the levels of phonology, lexis, syntax and text;
Analyse and appreciate literary and non-literary texts, including an awareness of genre and critical approach;
Appreciate how social and cultural contexts affect both the construction of meaning in language, and the production and reception of literary and non-literary texts;
Think critically and independently, and express ideas clearly and coherently in spoken and written modes;
Develop a range of transferable skills intrinsic to the subject areas and of value to graduate employment.
