Course programme

Core modules

You'll take the following core modules:

Theory and Practice in Language Teaching (20 credit points):This module develops your understanding of a wide range of teaching methodologies for both general purpose teaching and for particular language elements and skills. It also introduces you to the theories and research findings from the field of second language acquisition with particular emphasis on instructed second language acquisition. You'll be able to critically evaluate the suitability of different teaching methodologies for promoting learning for particular student groups and teaching/learning contexts.

Analysing Language in Use (20 credit points): You'll develop your knowledge and skills in analysing language in use. It covers fundamental areas in language analysis for English language teaching practitioners. It also focuses on the collection of linguistic data from various social contexts and their analysis at different linguistic levels.

Course Design and Assessment (20 credit points): The module aims to provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to evaluate different types of course and syllabus design and to design a course. You'll develop a critical understanding of principles and theoretical issues relating to course and syllabus design, through examination of different approaches to and descriptions of the course design process.

Research Methods (20 credit points): This module provides essential preparation for assignments and dissertations. You'll develop research skills and apply them to methodologies required for English Language Teaching research. In the first half, you'll analyse the key components in published research literature and critically evaluate the research design and methodology used. In the second half, you'll design a small-scale research project and conduct a pilot study to prepare for your dissertation.

Dissertation (60 credit points): The dissertation is a 15,000 word piece of independent work that builds upon the practical, theoretical and research skills of the MA course.

In addition to the core modules, you will be able to choose two of the following choice of 20-credit option modules:

  • blended Learning and CALL: multimedia applications in language learning;
  • English for professional purposes;
  • materials development;
  • teacher education;
  • teaching English to young learners;
