What are the entry requirements?
You will need at least 5 GCSE grades at A*-C (including grade B or above in English Language) and AS Level in English Literature obtained in 2008/2009.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.

  • Minimum Literacy Level: Level 2
  • Reading: You can read and summarise information by selecting and using different types of documents to obtain relevant information; skim and scan documents to gain a general idea of content and identify the information you need; recognise the writer's intentions and identify the main points, ideas and lines of reasoning; summarise information to suit your purpose. Writing: You can present relevant information in a format that suits your purpose; structure your writing to help readers follow and understand your main points; spell, punctuate and use grammar accurately; construct complex sentences and make your meaning clear. Minimum Numeracy Level: Level 2

Interpret information: You can read and understand tables, charts, graphs and diagrams; read and understand numbers used in different ways; estimate amounts and proportions; make accurate observations and select appropriate methods to get the results you need. Carry out calculations: You can carry out calculations involving two or more steps, with numbers of any size, with and without a calculator; work with and convert between fractions, decimals and percentages; convert measurements between systems (e.g. pounds to kilograms); work out areas and volumes; work out dimensions from scale drawings; use proportions and calculate ratios where appropriate; compare sets of data of an appropriate size and use range to describe the spread within sets of data.

What qualification will I receive?
GCE A Level in English Language.

Where can it lead?
This course can lead to progression in studying English at Higher Education. It will also count towards your UCAS points. This qualification could also help with career prospects in related fields.

What will I study?
You will study two units.

Unit 1: Reading for Meaning

Students should read at least the equivalent of three texts on the theme of 'Love through the Ages', including:

1. Reading in the literature of love including the three genres of prose, poetry and drama.

2. Literature written by both men and women

3. Literature through time (from Chaucer to the present day).

4. Some non-fiction texts.

Unit 2: Extended Essay and Shakespeare Study

You will be required to write an extended essay (3,000 words) comparing three texts and focused on:

1. Comparison

2. Appreciation of the writer's choices of form, structure and language

3. Exploring interpretations of text

4. Some understanding of the significance of context

How will I be taught?
You will learn through lectures, classwork, individual tutorials as well as personal study.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through a series of examinations and coursework.

You have access to a range of online resources, enrichment facilities including study skills, sports as well as group meetings once a week.
