AS English Literature
Level: AS/A2

Awarding Body: AQA - Specification B

Course Content:
AS Level:

Each student will be examined on two drama texts to produce a coursework portfolio of two written essays. Texts may include Shakespeare's Othello, Hamlet, Arthur Miller's All My Sons or Hampton's Les Liaisons Dangereuses. Two prose texts will be studied for examination and may include Ian McEwan's Enduring Love or James Joyce's Dubliners. Finally, students will be examined on a selection of poems from two different poets which may include Thomas Hardy, W.H. Auden or Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

A2 Level:

Students will be examined on three texts from the genre of Gothic or Pastoral Literature. These texts may include Christopher Marlowe's Dr Faustus, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn or Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles. Students will also produce a coursework folder consisting of two pieces. The first will be a comparison of two texts and assignments in the past have compared the work of Hanif Kureishi and Jeanette Winterson, and black American writers such as Alice Walker and Toni Morrison. The second coursework piece will involve studying an anthology of critical writing and applying it to a piece of literature.

Teaching Learning Methods:
Students must be prepared to read a variety of texts and explore their personal response to them in classroom discussion, essay-writing and coursework assignments. Class-time will involve a number of teaching and learning styles, including small and large group discussion, audio-visual materials and student presentations. Investigations through role-play and personal research will also take place. Above all, the course encourages students to become independent readers of literature who can work effectively on their own as well as in a classroom environment. Every effort is made to offer extra-curricular activities, such as theatre trips, to enhance learning and understanding.

Assessment:
The course is modular and thus affords students the opportunity to re-sit examinations on one additional occasion if necessary.

AS Level:

ASPECTS OF NARRATIVE(2 HOUR EXAMINATION)- 60%

DRAMATIC GENRES(COURSEWORK)- 40%

A2 Level:

ASPECTS OF NARRATIVE(2 HOUR EXAMINATION)- 30%

Skills & Commitment:
Students must have a genuine enthusiasm for literature in order to succeed at this level. Essay writing is one of the key skills required of students. The suggested weekly private study for an A level course is five hours, but close textual reading and wider reading regularly demands in excess of this.

Cost:
Students are required to buy the majority of set texts at AS and A2 level but the subject area can assist in cases of financial hardship. We offer a variety of visits to theatre productions and the opportunity to participate in revision courses throughout the year which are an additional expense but are usually subsidised.

Progression:
With the exception of technical and vocational degrees, a good pass in A level English Literature places a student in a strong position for most degree courses or fields of employment.

Complimentary Subjects:
Complementary subjects on offer in the College include Media Studies, Art and Design, History and any Modern Language.
