Who is the programme for? The programme is for anyone who wishes to develop their written and spoken English skills, or wishes to progress to further study where GCSE English is a requirement.

What will I study? The programme involves studying a play by Shakespeare, a novel written by a major author, texts from different cultures and traditions, non-fiction texts and media texts.

Entry to the Programme?

How is it assessed? The course is assessed as 40% coursework, which involves writing 4 assignments and taking part in set speaking and listening activities.The final examination is 60% of the overall mark and there are 2 externally set exams.

Future prospects? This qualification is a recognised part of the National Qualifications framework. As such, GCSE English provides progression from Key stage 3 to post 16 studies. It lays an appropriate foundation for further study of the subject or related subjects. In addition, it provides a worthwhile course for candidates from various ages and from diverse backgrounds in terms of general education and lifelong learning.

When will the programme start? The programme commences in September and January.

How long will it take? The programme is for 1 year, finishing with examination in June.

What about the Money? Please note that fee remission applies to anyone on a means tested benefit, job seekers allowance, a programme designated as Skills for Life (SfL) or where someone is studying their first full Level 2 or first full Level 3 (aged 19 25). If you are under 19 on the 31 August 2009 you would not normally pay tuition or registration fees. If a programme is Full Cost then no fee remission is applicable.
