Birkbeck's BSc Environment and Sustainability gives you a deep understanding of what drives environmental change and how to manage natural systems under unprecedented pressure. Learning from internationally-recognised researchers, you will discover the core scientific principles you need to understand key environmental challenges, including climate change, pollution and waste management, biodiversity loss and biosecurity.
You will become familiar with fundamental dimensions of environment and sustainability, including adaptation, mitigation and corporate responsibility. You will learn to collect, analyse and interpret environmental data to improve management practices.
Core modules will give you a grounding in the ecological and social dimensions of environment and sustainability. You can tailor your degree by choosing option modules on themes like the global food crisis, nature conservation, hydrology, storms, flooding and sea-level rise, cities and urban inequalities, and geographic information science (GIS).
You will benefit from our mix of classroom and field-based teaching, including a number of fieldwork opportunities that bring together students to build networks and develop important skills in data collection and analysis. You will develop the social and technical skills you need for both academic research and the modern workplace.

Course programme
You need a total of 360 credits to complete your undergraduate degree. We will carefully guide you through a wide range of subjects that are of relevance for environmental management.
In Year 1, you take four compulsory modules that reflect the foundations of both the physical environment and how humans interact and shape it. These are complemented by learning modern techniques such as geographic information science.
In Year 2, you take three compulsory modules and choose one option module which is of relevance for managing the physical and human environment. You will also learn important data-gathering methods.
In Year 3, you undertake a substantial piece of written work: either a 30-credit literature review, or a 60-credit research project. You can also specialise further by choosing from a range of advanced option modules to make up your full 120 credits for the year.
