This is the first half of a year long course which will help you develop the English you need to participate actively and at a high level in UK life both at home, with friends and at work. You will develop your English language skills in writing, reading, speaking and listening but focus more on speaking and listening ready to take an English Speaking Board Level 2 exam in February. Throughout the course, you will practise becoming fluent in exchanging views on a range of topics such as the news, culture, the media, politics, relationships and work. You will develop your presentation skills so you can prepare and give coherent, well-structured talks across a range of topics using effective introductions and conclusions. You will work on pronunciation of individual sounds and how to stress effectively. Your vocabulary will increase to enable you to talk and write about complex issues with a richness of meaning. You will practise identifying details in conversations and spoken narratives across a range of topics and types of discourse. You will begin to develop writing discursively (ie. with arguments and evidence) across a range of topics in current affairs, entertainment, work etc. with coherent and cogent structure. You will practise extracting information and detail from a range of texts within current affairs, literature, culture, news etc. and
identifying the purpose, stance and tone of pieces of writing. You will develop your use of a range of tenses in both active and passive voices including distinguishing between simple and continuous forms and perfect and simple forms.

About this course

• pronounce all individual English sounds with good accuracy and stress/unstress effectively
• talk and write about complex issues with a richness of vocabulary
• identify details in conversations and spoken narratives across a range of topics and types of discourse
• write more detailed discursive texts(ie. with arguments and evidence) across a range of topics
• extract information and detail from a range of texts within current affairs, literature, culture, news etc. and make appropriate notes
• identifying the purpose, stance and tone of pieces of writing
• use of a range of tenses in both active and passive voices including distinguishing between simple and continuous forms and perfect and simple forms

By the end of this course you will also have improved your digital skills through use of Google Classroom, the internet and Microsoft Word/PowerPoint or Google docs.

You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper and a file to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts and worksheets.

This will be a dynamic and interactive course with lots of practice. You will work in pairs or small groups, and sometimes as a whole group. Your tutor will also work with you individually. There will be speaking and listening, reading and writing tasks and games as well as the use of YouTube, an interactive whiteboard and computers to help your learning. Everything that you learn will help you in your daily life. You need to do homework every week and use Google Classroom outside the class.

Course programme

You will practise reading, writing and speaking and listening but you will focus more on speaking and listening in order to prepare for the exam. Each class will focus on a certain topic such as the news, current affairs, music, sports, employment, or cultural values. You will focus on:

• becoming fluent in exchanging views on a range of topics such as the news, culture, the media, politics, relationships and work
• developing your presentation skills so you can prepare and give coherent, well-structured talks across a range of topics using effective introductions and conclusions
• pronunciation of individual sounds and how to stress effectively
• increasing your vocabulary to enable you to talk and write about complex issues with a richness of meaning
• identifying details in conversations and spoken narratives across a range of topics and types of discourse
• developing your discursive writing (ie. with arguments and evidence) across a range of topics in current affairs, entertainment, work etc.

Additional information

There are many courses you could do next. You can continue to the second part of Level 2 to focus on your reading and writing. You could do Cambridge English: Advanced. You can also do a number of courses without exams at the same time as this course or after it. These courses include: Grammar in Practice (Upper intermediate or Advanced), Academic Writing Skills in Practice, Read Well, Write Well (Level 1-2), Writing Skills in Practice (Level 1-2), Advanced Writing Skills in Practice, English Conversation Practice, ESOL and Film, ESOL and Making Podcasts, ESOL and Reading Stories. ESOL Pronunciation Stage 1 would be excellent course to do. Our different English for Business courses would be very good progressions e.g. Communicating at Work.
