About this course

At the European Master in Health Economics and Management (Eu-HEM) you will develop competences and expertise in the field of health economics and policy, health care management, health law and regulation.

EUHEM prepares students to staff and executive positions in organizations, institutions and companies involved in health care provision. A key to the fulfillment of steady job in this sector is awareness of the societal relevance of health care and the implied constraints imposed by social rules, regulations and the law. The programme therefore aims to develop competences and expertise in the field of health economics and policy, health care management, health law and regulation.

The prospective candidate will develop:

Ability to use disciplines and concepts required in formulating, implementing and evaluating strategic choices in health care
Knowledge of key options in the policy, planning and financing of health care services
Understanding of the diversity of international health policies
International and comparative views on solutions and best practices
Practical experience in managerial issues;
Long-run orientation in problem analysis and solving
Basic quantitative skills and the ability to apply them in a problem-solving context;
Communication and co-operation skills
Knowledge of the objectives of health care systems and how the choice of objective may carry over to priority setting

For health care managers, policy analysts and academic researchers, knowledge of multiple relevant disciplines and an international view and network are keys to understanding and solving the problems that health care systems and health care services are facing in the 21st century.

An international master degree is strongly supported by future employers in international organizations, hospitals and care organizations, governmental agencies, and research institutions.

Programme structure

The European Master in Health Economics and Management is a full time programme. Learning activities are organised according to the following plan for 120 credits in total.

The programme is under revision. Alteration in the programme may apply from autumn 2019.

The 1st semester is aimed at acquiring fundamentals of economics, management, law, policy sciences and research methods relevant to the healthcare sector. All fundamental courses need to be passed (or exemption received) in order to start 2nd semester courses. The offered admission will indicate at which partner university you will start your studies.

2nd and 3rd semesters are devoted to the development of advanced and specialised skills on current issues in the healthcare sector. You choose your specialisation during the 1st semester. This is done in the end of September/beginning of October. You are invited to an information session, in which all the specialisations are presented, prior to your decision.

You can gain specialisation by an internship in prominent organisations and by the possibility of spending up to two semesters in a partner university. Agreements allow you to access teaching activities, earn credits from graduate programs, and achieve a joint degree with the following academic partners:

  • Institute of Economics, University of Bologna

There are six different specialisations to choose from:

  • Management of Healthcare Institutions (2nd semester: Oslo, 3rd semester: Innsbruck)
  • Economic Evaluation in Healthcare (2nd semester: Rotterdam, 3rd semester: Oslo)
  • Health Economics and Policy (2nd semester: Oslo, 3rd semester: Bologna)
  • Decision Making in Healthcare (2nd semester: Rotterdam, 3rd semester: Innsbruck)
  • Global Health (2nd semester: Rotterdam, 3rd semester: Bologna)
  • Healthcare Finance and Management (2nd semester: Bologna, 3rd semester: Innsbruck)

The 4th semester is dedicated to the preparation of the master thesis. If you want to write your master thesis in Oslo, you need to submit a research proposal no later than 15th of November in the 3rd semester.
