A European Tree Technician is defined as a person employed in, or aspiring to, junior or middle management, or taking a supervisory role in arboriculture.

European Tree Technicians are skilled in operations on and in amenity trees with the aim of keeping them healthy and safe whilst bearing in mind the demands of bio-diversity. In particular they act on the basis of current best practice within arboriculture, conservation, environmental protection and work safety.

Their field of competence will also include technical knowledge, organisational and supervisory skills.

The examination is open to those candidates, who can prove that have either:

A European Tree Worker certificate or have successfully completed a final exam verified by the European Arboricultural Council in such areas as arboriculture, landscape management, horticulture, gardening or forestry

and have been employed for at least 3 years in total in one of these professions.

The examination is divided into the following parts:

Written examination

The written examination consists of 50% short questions (duration about 60 minutes) and 50% longer, essay type questions (duration about 120 minutes). This exam is supervised and should take no longer than 180 minutes.

Management exercises in the field of tree inspections

The candidate will be asked to under-take a tree survey of trees and under-take a detailed tree inspection of an in-dividual tree, giving recommendations for remedial action in each case. The management exercise will include oral questions. This exam should take no longer than 60 minutes.

Management exercises in economics, law and social studies

In this management exercise the candidate will be asked to prove that he/she is able to recognise, analyse and assess various economic, legal and social aspects, within his/her task area. The management exercise will include oral questions. This should take no longer than 180 minutes.
