Course programme

The DPhil follows on from the taught MSc in Evidence-Based Health Care (EBHC) and is overseen by the University's Continuing Education Board. Admission is through the Department for Continuing Education.

The part-time DPhil is part of the Evidence-Based Health Care Programme, which is jointly run with the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine in the Nuffield Department of Primary Health Care Sciences. You have access to the full range of Oxford's library and computing facilities.

The University's DPhil regulations normally require a minimum of four years' part-time study, equivalent to two years' full-time, up to a maximum of eight years part-time study. Research students are required to attend Oxford in person for a minimum of 30 days each year.

If you are a research student you may be required to undertake appropriate research training provided within the department. In addition, you will be strongly encouraged to participate in seminars and informal meetings with staff and other researchers. The major commitment of your time will be to individual study and research.

If you are a research student you are also a member of the University with one of two statuses, depending on the stage of your research - Probationer Research Students (PRS) status, or DPhil student status.

Between each status, you must pass through a milestone assessment. To pass from PRS to DPhil, the milestone is the 'transfer of status'. Before submitting the thesis, you must pass the 'confirmation of status' milestone.

Supervision

Supervision is arranged to suit your DPhil topic and usually involves staff attached to the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine. It may also involve other staff from within the Medical Sciences Division as well as co-supervision with members of the Evidence-Based network.

The allocation of graduate supervision for this course is the responsibility of the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences and/or the Department for Continuing Education and it is not always possible to accommodate the preferences of incoming graduate students to work with a particular member of staff. Under exceptional circumstances a supervisor may be found outside the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences and/or the Department for Continuing Education.

Graduate destinations

Most students commencing this programme are already in employment and continue their professional work alongside their doctoral research. You can see a range of backgrounds and research projects represented in the DPhil student profiles on the Continuing Education website.

Completing a DPhil in Evidence-Based Health Care enhances professional life and enables graduates to further their careers. Those who complete the doctoral programme will:

  • gain an evidence-based approach to their professional practice
  • have undertaken research training which will enable them to become independent researchers.

Changes to this course and your supervision

The University will seek to deliver this course in accordance with the description set out in this course page. However, there may be situations in which it is desirable or necessary for the University to make changes in course provision, either before or after registration. In certain circumstances, for example due to visa difficulties or because the health needs of students cannot be met, it may be necessary to make adjustments to course requirements for international study.

Where possible your academic supervisor will not change for the duration of your course. However, it may be necessary to assign a new academic supervisor during the course of study or before registration for reasons which might include sabbatical leave, parental leave or change in employment.

For further information, please see our page on changes to courses.
