The Executive MBA, launched in 1998, is an innovative two-year part-time open-learning programme for experienced managers. The programme's flexible delivery and highly vocational emphasis make it particularly suitable for busy executives seeking to develop themselves and their organisations without taking a career break.
The Executive MBA is designed to build on participants' work experience and help them to develop into strong all-round managers while also gaining the prestigious MBA qualification. Managers with an Executive MBA from the University of the West of Scotland bring to their organisations the capacities to recognise and respond to:
  • opportunities for growth
  • volatility and complex change
  • the need to re-invent organisations
The Executive MBA is designed for managers with work experience and has a real-world emphasis. The programme comprises three stages:
    • Certificate in Resource Management
    • Diploma in Strategic Management
    • Master of Business Administration
Each stage has four modules and lasts approximately eight months. Normally the entire programme takes two calendar years to complete. However, each stage is recognised as a meaningful and respected qualification and participants may choose, if necessary, to take a break between stages. In such cases they are required to complete the programme within five years.
Programme Delivery & Timetable
The Executive MBA is offered on a part-time open learning basis, which means that it is highly flexible. Participants do not need to take a career break or time off work to achieve the MBA qualification. They can study at a time and place that suits them and their work and personal commitments
Programme participants benefit from all-day face-to-face learning sessions held one Saturday per month at the grade A-listed mansion, Craigie House in Ayr.
Between these monthly Saturday sessions the "Virtual Campus", an internet-based e-learning environment which is highly innovative and user friendly, can be accessed by programme participants. The "Virtual Campus" is based on the Blackboard platform. Its features include:
  • Executive MBA programme learning materials
  • a wide range of links to other learning resources
  • a discussion board and email system to ensure valuable communication with tutors and other participants
The "high tech-high touch" combination of the Virtual Campus and the monthly Saturday workshops provide the flexible yet personalised combination today's busy managers appreciate.
The Executive MBA programme normally runs over 2 calendar years, starting late September, and is broken into 3 stages. Participants can take a break between stages, the only proviso being that they must complete the programme within 5 years.
