What you will learn This course aims to provide a wide understanding of explosives and their effects. On successful completion attendees will: Understand the principles, manufacture, initiation and effects of primary and secondary explosives, propellants and pyrotechnics and their application in commercial and military environments Be familiar with current ammunition Appreciate the importance of safety, legislation, reliability, testing, storage and environmental impact of explosives Have the knowledge to analyse the theories of thermodynamics of explosive reactions and perform calculations for enthalpy, free energy and gas equilibria Be able to identify the mechanisms for initiation and appreciate the differences between deflagration and detonation and the classification of explosives.

This short course, which will be taught at MSc standard, is one of the core modules that comprise the MSc Explosives Ordnance Engineering.


Who should attend This course is suitable for military officers, defence industry staff, government servants and civilian students who have an appropriate degree in science or engineering or relevant experience.
