The Extended International Foundation Year will allow you to develop your capabilities to study in a specific subject as well as enhancing your English language skills. You will develop an understanding of the expectations and the academic skills required to study successfully for a degree in the UK. On successful completion of the course, you will then be able to apply for a degree course at the University of Wolverhampton, subject to professional body requirements.
During the course, you will study a mixture of subject specific modules, for example:
Introduction to Media & Materials
and more general modules
Getting Ahead as an International Student - that will expand your English language and learning skills in preparation for your higher education journey.
You are encouraged to increase the benefit of the various tasks undertaken in the general study skills/language modules by applying them to some of the topics from your chosen academic subject.
To summarise, the course will give you;
• An introduction to your chosen specialist subject
• A solid foundation in the key academic skills like research and referencing that will support degree level study.
• Academic language development skills
• A choice of pathways based on your chosen degree course

About this course
On completing the Extended International Foundation Year, you will be well prepared for further academic study at the University of Wolverhampton (or another UK university which recognises the programme), subject to professional body requirements.
You will be able to:
Identify key concepts and theories appropriate to your chosen subject context.
Select and utilise appropriate information for given situations and scenarios.
Demonstrate the origins of your ideas by referencing sources used in your work.
Express and present findings using appropriate language and conventions for academic audiences.
Demonstrate an appropriate level of capabilities to work within a digital environment.
Identify different learning styles and reflect on your own learning and personal development.
2019 Entry
A pass at High School Certificate or equivalent.
Students will need to pass a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as UKVI IELTS and achieve B1 to meet UKVI requirements. IELTS 5.0 overall with no element less than 4.5
Other Requirements
Those meeting the entry requirements will be asked to provide a satisfactory portfolio.

Our dedicated staff provide expert support and tuition to help prepare you for your future study choices a typical week will include 15-20 contact hours (teacher-led learning).
All modules include a number of tutorial sessions either in small group sessions or one-to-one.
You will have access to extensive online facilities, as well as our learning centres/ libraries, allowing you to make the most of the resources available to you.

Students are assessed in the following ways:
- Case study: summative assessment on a project work undertaken throughout the period
- Seminar: summative assessment on the student’s ability to research and discuss a topic
- Portfolio of written tasks
Tests and examinations
You are assessed by completing a wide range of learning activities that will be appropriate to the learning outcomes of the individual modules that you study. The assessments are designed to give you experience of and to develop skills that you will need for further study in higher education in the UK
There are two types of assessment used on this course:
- Formative assessment will help to guide, encourage and support you to understand the expectations of your chosen academic study and general expectations of studying at a HE level. Advice will be given that is relevant to the learning outcomes and assessment criteria and will identify areas for improvement or enhancement.
- Summative assessment is marked against learning outcomes and assessment criteria. It will give you your grade that will contribute to your course award.
