You are not guaranteed a place on the course until completion of the information pack.

The Non-Medical Prescribing programme is for registered nurses and allied health professionals. You will undertake two modules at level 6: The study of “Clinical pharmacology for health care professionals (6NH033)” and “Non-medical prescribing practice (6NH026)”.

Independent prescribing is approved for nurses, physiotherapists, podiatrists and chiropodists. Supplementary prescribing is also approved for some HCPC allied health professionals namely physiotherapists, podiatrists and chiropodists, radiologists and optometrists.

You will be required to meet the specific professional entry requirements laid down by the NMC/ HCPC. Health service industry nomination and support by a designated medical practitioner/mentor is expected in line with professional standards which will underpin the award for you to gain skills and knowledge for independent/supplementary prescribing from the British National Formulary.

About this course



To develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding, qualities, skills and other attributes to be able to prescribe and assess and consult with patient/clients, clients, parents and carers.


Undertake a thorough history, including medication history and current medication (including over-the-counter, alternative and complementary health therapies) to inform diagnosis and prescribe safely, appropriately and cost effectively.


Understand and apply the relevant legislation to the practice of nurse/midwife prescribing and the influences that can affect prescribing, demonstrating your understanding by managing your prescribing practice in an ethical way.


Critically appraise, use sources of information/advice and decision support systems in prescribing practice and develop a clinical management plan within legislative requirements (supplementary prescribing).


Understand and apply knowledge of drug actions in prescribing practice and demonstrate an understanding of the roles and relationships of others involved in prescribing, supplying and administering medicines.


Practise within a framework of professional accountability and responsibility.

For the V300 at least 3 years post registration clinical experience will be required with at least 1 year preceding application, spent working in the clinical area in which you intend to prescribe.

A health assessment module will be undertaken or confirmation from your employer confirming that you are competent to undertake health assessment

Course programme

There are a number of ways of studying the Non-Medical Prescribing courses. However the number of days for the programme is set by the professional standards.

The Non-Medical Prescribing (V300 – Independent/ Supplementary) course comprises the following two modules:

Module 1 - Clinical pharmacology for health care professionals (6NH033)

Module 2 - Non-medical prescribing practice (6NH026)

The Community Practitioner Prescribing (NMC V150) is a different award and comprises of one modulewhich, when successfully completed, enables the practitioner to meet the required professional standards for Non-Medical Prescribing from the Community Practitioner’s Formulary.
