Year 1

Advanced Diploma VRQ is made up of nine units; two units are common core which are assessed by an external exam, and seven units are skills-specific to fabrication and welding, which include three welding processes, sheet and plate work and pattern development. These will be assessed on programme through short answer question assessments. The NVQ in Fabrication will be assessed by work completed within the company with units structured around the job role. The skills and knowledge in one or more of a wide variety of fabrication and welding activities including: manual welding , welding machine setting and operating, sheet metalworking (3mm or less), plate working (3 mm upwards) , structural steel work , pipe and tube fabrication, rail welding.

Year 2

Within the second year you will complete your practical assessments and also focus on completing your competencies within your NVQ portfolio. This will be your responsibility to complete your job knowledge questions and also ensure that you cover the range of work required for your assessor to observe you in your working environment.

Additional information

The qualification is assessed by a portfolio of assessment verbal/written questioning witness testimony assessor observations. Performance evidence must be the main form of evidence gathered. In order to demonstrate consistent competent performance for a unit, a minimum of three different examples of performance of the unit activity will be required. It is recommended that where possible evidence is gathered holistically and that the assessment evidence for the mandatory units is gathered during the performance of the optional units. Evidence should be obtained as a whole where practically possible since competent performance in the optional assessment routes is often dependent on competence in the mandatory assessment routes.
