Entry Requirements

Minimum of 4 GCSEs A - C; 9 - 4 in GCSE English and GCSE Maths. A - C for GCSE Art and Design or art-related subject. Relevant Level 2 Diploma at minimum Merit, plus 9 - 4 in GCSE English and GCSE Maths and a portfolio of varied, good quality work. Selection is by interview.

Career Progression

City College Norwich is a member of the University of the Arts London Progression Partnership to promote the recruitment of talented, creative students from high quality further education institutions to UAL higher education degree level courses. The course team also work with local and national higher education providers such as NUA, London School of Fashion and Central St Martins to ensure that our students are ready and prepared for their next step. We also work collaboratively with local, national and international artists and creative agencies to provide fantastic experience of work for our students and also to ensure that our courses prepare students well for their future careers in the industry. City College Norwich also has an outstanding Apprenticeship team who can provide advice and guidance for students wishing to follow an Apprenticeship route into the industry.
For those students who choose not to pursue careers within the creative industries the course provides fantastic opportunities to develop collaborative working skills, problem-solving, creative and the higher order evaluative skills demanded by universities and employers

Course programme

Summary

Students choose from several pathways for their Level 3 Diploma and Extended Diploma; deciding to study either: 3D Spatial Design, Fine Art, Photography, Digital Art, Animation and Games Design, Fashion Textiles, Graphics and Illustration or Art & Design.
All students on the listed pathways work towards the University of the Arts London (UAL) Level 3 Diploma in Art and Design in their first year of study; progressing onto their University of the Arts London (UAL) Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design in their second year. The Extended Diploma at Distinction level is allocated 168 UCAS points, which is equivalent to 3 full A Levels at grade A.
Throughout the course students will have the opportunity to show their work at a variety of fashion and performing arts events. Students will also have the opportunity to show work in alive selling exhibition and also at the end of year Creative Arts Exhibition. In addition, visiting lecturers and study visits, including trips both local, national and international enrich the overall learning experience and provide an opportunity for the students to enquire about their chose area of study. Core and specialist units include:
Unit 1: Introduction to visual language in art & design.
Unit 2: Introduction to research skills in art & design.
Unit 3: Introduction to critical and contextual awareness in art & design.
Unit 4: Introduction to material, processes and technical skills in art & design.
Unit 5: An integrated approach to 2D problem solving in art & design.
Unit 6: An integrated approach to 3D problem solving in art & design.
Unit 7: An integrated approach to time based problem solving in art & design.
Unit 8: Developing and art & design project
Unit 9: Opportunities for progression in art & design.

During the course students will have the opportunity to show and sell their work.

Additional information

Progression Successfully completion the Level 3 Diploma in Art & Design will provide direct entry onto the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design in the second year. The design and structure of the University of the Arts London (UAL) Level 3 Diploma in Art & Design allows students the opportunity to further extend their learning by choosing an alternative Creative Arts pathway in their second year. For example, provided that they meet the entry requirements, a student could follow the Level 3 Fashion Textiles pathway in their first year and then choose to follow the 3D Spatial Design, Photography, Digital Art, Animation and Games Design, Fine Art, Art & Design or Graphics and Illustration pathway in their second year. This multi-disciplinary route is becoming increasingly popular with our students who recognise that they need a broad portfolio of skills to thrive in the creative sector.
