History

Fashion Antidote is the brain child of SUSAN BACKHOUSE an acclaimed fashion designer, consultant, retailer and business woman with extensive experience in education as a university lecturer, tutor and course manager who has “been there done that”.

Susan ran her own highly successful label produced fashion collections which sold in major stores and boutiques around the world including Harvey Nichols, Liberty and Topshop in London and Saks Fifth Avenue and Macy’s in New York as well as through her own central London retail outlet. Her designs were featured in magazines and media internationally. Her experience in the fashion industry covers sourcing, designing, manufacturing, wholesaling and retailing, marketing, sales and business.

She has many years of teaching experience having worked at numerous colleges and universities as a Senior Lecturer and Course Manager. Her broad experience within the Fashion Industry and in Education has given her the knowledge and skills, inspiration and incentive to set up Fashion Antidote.

Other members of the team come from a wide range of fashion backgrounds, are highly trained individuals and retain links within the industry.

Fashion Antidote Fashion School is a small independently owned fashion school and studio based in East London just off Brick Lane with its vibrant mix of restaurants, bars, galleries, vintage stores, fabric shops and minutes away from Spitalfield’s market. Our emphasis is on teaching fashion and fashion related subjects as well specialising in courses and workshops on fashion business and how to set up your own company.We aim to give students a taste of the real fashion industry. Our studio is also used by fashion designers, pattern cutters, stylists and consultants. You will be given insider information and shown tips and techniques as used in the industry that will save you time and give your work a professional finish. .We offer a wide range of classes, courses and workshops covering all creative and practical fashion subjects. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed and sociable. All levels are catered for whether you are an absolute beginner taking the first steps or already have skills you want to update, a budding fashion student or a fashion professional - we have courses for you.Prices are kept to an affordable level and courses are planned in bite sized steps to assist you to progress from stage to stage so that you can go at your own pace and progress from beginners levels onwards according to your available time and budget. We have day, evening and week end classes as well as special intensive courses and one off workshops.All our tutors are practising professionals and highly competent in their field who either have their own labels, work in their own businesses or with leading designers as well as being experienced tutors who also teach at much bigger well known colleges and universities in and around London. You will be taught by tutors who are at the top of their profession enabling you to gain insider information and contacts within the fashion industry. You can take a course for fun and enjoyment, to be creative or to save money by making or repairing your own clothes, to improve your skills or to aide your career prospects and maybe gain employment or become self employed. Fashion Antidote also offers a consultancy and mentoring service and has links with sample makers, manufacturers, pattern cutters, etc and we can provide you with the contacts and services to set up and run your business successfully.We also offer fashion students assistance with the planning, pattern cutting and making of their final collections.
