Course programme

The fashion department provides an ambitious environment in which innovation, invention and originality can be developed through highly imaginative and dynamic teaching and learning. The staff are creative, enthusiastic professionals with vision. We believe in the vital role that designers play in society and are dedicated to guiding students through to their chosen career. The course modular framework embraces all elements of fashion design, paying close attention to trends, range building, illustration and the visual arts. In an atmosphere of design exploration and technical enquiry students can acquire skills to enable them to become versatile fashion specialists. Their artistic talents are integrated with garment construction techniques to produce unique fashion statements. The learning programme is enhanced by excellent equipment and facilities including state of the art Gerber CAD technology. A strong work experience ethos is also advocated. The course philosophy encourages students who are passionate about fashion. In return, we are committed to contemporary design and the future of our young designers. We pride ourselves in always looking forward and propelling students to the forefront of the fashion industry.

Course Features

Students have access to well equipped work studio with industrial machinery and spacious pattern cutting areas. Students all have designated individual work spaces

The department houses the Shared Technology Resource Centre which is a state of the Art Gerber Design Centre. The commercial centre works with garment and textile companies providing valuable links. Students access the centre for workshops throughout the course giving them skills which are very much in demand within industry. The centre has recently acquired laser welding (joining) technology for the production of wearable technologies and technical textile products

Students participate in National competitions

Regular visits to exhibitions, galleries and trade fairs are integrated into the course along with international visits to places such as New York

Graduating students exhibit their work at London graduate Fashion Week, a high profile event in the fashion industry calendar

Student exchange agreement with Kansas State University in the USA

Career Prospects and Progression

The course develops students' skills in a variety of areas allowing for a range of career progression routes. Typical routes include, fashion design, fashion illustration, trend prediction, styling, visual merchandising, film/television costume design, pattern cutting, garment technology. Post graduate research is also a possible area for progression

Method of Assessment

Coursework is assessed by individual module, with credits accumulated annually.

Course Length

3-years full-time, or maximum of 60 credits per academic year for part-time study.
