About the FdSc Community Mental Health programme
One in four British adults experience at least one diagnosable mental health problem in any one year and one in six experiences this at any given time (The Office for National Statistics Psychiatric Morbidity report, 2001). As such, health and social care services must ensure that they develop and employ staff best placed to meet the needs of such a significant number of people.

This programme is therefore designed to echo the focus of national strategy and quality assurance frameworks to produce graduates who have a critical understanding of mental health from theoretical, practical and policy perspectives. Entry requirements For 2017 entry onwards: 80 UCAS points from two A' Levels (or equivalent level 3 qualification) or an Access to HE Diploma. Students must hold English and Maths GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent). The Institute will also encourage applications from students who lack formal qualifications. All applicants will be interviewed, set an appropriate piece of work (1500 word essay) and a judgement made taking into account their academic potential and relevant practice experience.All applicants will be required to undertake a target skills assessment as part of their admissions process. All students must complete a minimum of 200 hours of mandatory work placement over the duration of the programme. Students are expected to complete relevant health screening questionnaires (when necessary for placement requirements) and DBS checks before entry into any work placement. What you will learn Year 1 Subject areas include: mental health promotion, advocacy, policy and practice applicaton to practice team and agency working and communication personal development and project management What Next Assistant Practitioner within a community mental health setting such as supported housing, day centres, community mental health centres, MIND, residential or nursing care homes. Further study opportunities may be available such as BSc Health and Social Care Top Up at the Institute or nationally on other top up provision. Programme Benefits Upon successful completion of this Foundation Degree, graduates will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to pursue a new career, or advance an existing one in the social care sector as an advanced practitioner. The programme also offers articulation onto one of the Institute's honours degree top-up programmes. The course provides the essential and transferable skills for individuals to succeed in the social care sector. Learning & Teaching Methods Methods of learning and teaching are designed to support students in becoming active members of a learning community. Students will be expected to work together in an informal environment as well as in formal classes where a culture of dignity, courtesy and mutual respect with staff and their peers is essential. A variety of methods will be used such as lectures, interactive lectures, seminars, workshops, group work, student led seminars, tutor-led seminars together with peer support. Integrating a work-based or placement opportunity, students will be visited in the workplace by a member of Institute staff to ensure a positive partnership between the employer mentor and to monitor that learning in the workplace is effective. Workplace learning is designed to support the development of an employable graduate equipped with the attributes, skills and knowledge to progress within a global market.
