On studying this course you will develop as a student to become a highly skilled, experienced professional with a comprehensive understanding of the Film and Television industries. You will be introduced to the creative and technical aspects of single camera filmmaking and multi-camera television production, supported by film and media theory to inform your practice. You will learn how to generate and develop ideas and adopt a creative approach to your work. In the final year you will undertake a major production project and experience how media theory underpins your practice. There will be opportunities for work experience with our partners at the BBC, other production companies and to work on projects for external clients.
In the second and third years there are a range of options to enable you to develop your own areas of interest and expertise. Between the second and third year you can also take a year out to study abroad at a partner university or to do a placement in industry.
The course is designed for those students who want to learn to make films and television programmes in a range of different formats and genres, using the most up to date industry standard technologies. It is intended for anyone who has an interest in film, television and media and whilst we are not subject specific the programme typically attracts students with an arts and humanities background in subjects such as Creative Media Production, Media Studies, Film Studies, English, Politics, Art and Design, Psychology, Economics or Music. We welcome students who have A-level, BTEC or equivalent qualifications.
If you choose to study Film and Television Production at the University of Bradford, you may be eligible to apply for a Royal Television Society Bursary.

The BA (Hons) Film and Television Production is intended to provide you with the opportunity to engage with the moving image both on an intellectual and practical level.

All modules are core.

Year 1

  • Creativity and Imagination (20 credits)
    The module is intended to foster and develop students' ability to create new ideas and to develop appropriate creative strategies for making artefacts, media production, other forms of digital media production, or for self-expression.
  • Reading the Screen (20 credits)
    The aims of the module are to introduce students to a variety of approaches applicable to reading various screens, and explore how meanings are generated via an understanding of visual literacy.
  • Moving Image Production (20 credits)
    To gain the skills required for basic video production in both single camera and multi camera situations.
  • Editing (20 credits)
    To gain an advanced understanding of non-linear editing.
  • Film – Narrative and Genre (20 credits)
    The aims of the module are: to investigate the variety of ways in which filmmakers have constructed narratives, both fiction and non-fiction, to explore the principles of narrative construction in cinema and to explore genre as a critical tool within Film Studies.
  • Institutions and Audiences (20 credits)
    The module aims to introduce students to the analysis of key theoretical approaches to film and media audiences and institutions.

At the end of Year 1, students will be eligible to exit with the award of certificate of Higher Education if they have successfully completed at least 120 credits and achieved the award learning outcomes.

Year 2

  • Factual Film and Television (20 credits)
    To explore the ways in which (predominantly) British film and television documentary texts have utilised established modes of practice, and how these have impacted on historical, social and political representations.
  • Soundscapes (20 credits)
    An understanding of the properties and uses of sound production and related theoretical perspectives. Use of theoretical models to analyse a subject related to sound. Understanding of working with sound.
  • Factual Production (20 credits)
    To develop an appreciation of audio and video theory within television production. Ability to analyse and understand different television genres.
  • British Film and Television Fictions (20 credits)
    The aims of the module are to explore British film and television drama as a genre, in order to develop an understanding of its social, cultural and political importance.
  • Drama Production (20 credits)
    To develop further appreciation of roles in TV production and consolidate understanding of TV production techniques as applied in current industry practices and standards.
  • Storytelling for Multiple Platforms (20 credits)
    The module aims to introduce students to the concept of creating content intended for a variety of media platforms.

At the end of Year 2, students will be eligible to exit with the award of Diploma of Higher Education if they have successfully completed at least 240 credits and achieved the award learning outcomes.

Final year

  • Major Project Pre-Production (20 credits) - core
  • Individual Project (40 credits) - core
    To integrate material from other modules into a major digital media project; to provide you with a platform for autonomous learning within your chosen area of specialism; to develop a self-critical, editorial awareness of one`s own body of work; to present that body of work in a visually impressive video; to develop presentation skills.
  • Alternative Film and Media (20 credits) - optional
    To research and critically analyse the ways in which 'alternative' (eg third cinema, avant-garde filmmaking, cult cinema, etc) film texts are made and can be interpreted.
  • Experimental Filmmaking (20 credits) - optional
    Explore the creative possibilities of digital film making encouraged by the introduction of new forms of media production.
  • Major Project Production (40 credits) - core

Students may be eligible to exit with the fall back award of Ordinary Degree of Bachelor if they have successfully completed at least 300 credits and achieved the award learning outcomes.

Students will be eligible for the award of Honours Degree of Bachelor if they have successfully completed at least 360 credits and achieved the award learning outcomes.
