What you need to know
How will I study?

In term 1 you’ll study introduction to camera, sound and lighting techniques; test shoots to develop skills and understanding of working as part of a production crew; develop ideas, pitch, script, shoot and edit a 5 minute film and research how a feature film is produced, distributed and exhibited. In term 2 you’ll study studio lighting techniques and learning to use professional lighting kits; introduction to digital and film motion cameras; analysis and research for a music promo video and shooting a music promo with a professional band and a guest lecturer. In term 3 fiction you’ll study production; shooting on location or building a set, scriptwriting, scheduling, casting and crewing up and shooting and editing a short drama to be shot on Panavision Genesis HD with a full set of prime lenses.
How will I be taught?

The HNC/D in Film Making is both a practical and theory based course that delivers industry access to professional film makers as guest lecturers who impart their knowledge through lighting, camera and sound workshops as well as class based knowledge and delivery. There are weekly classes in fundamental aspects of film making including: shot composition, 180 and 360 degree rules; project management; editing techniques; understanding the film & TV industry; working freelance & managing budgets.
How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through several practical projects throughout the year which incorporate the more theoretical and research based units of the qualification.
