Course programme

What you need to know
How will I study?

The first year focuses on British & American cinema. You will be taught how to identify the formal elements of films, micro features (camera work, sound etc.) and analyse how these provoke audience responses. You will also learn about two important film concepts, genre and narrative, and why these are important to audiences' understanding of films. You will also be taught about the British and American film industries and important issues that have affected these industries, the types of films that get produced and how they're marketed. Finally, you will study films from a specific British film genre and conduct a comparative study of two US films to gain understanding of how these films communicate messages about people, places and issues. The second year further develops your understanding of film through studying world cinema topics, spectatorship issues and applying different critical approaches to film in a case study.
