In Year 1 students are given technical inductions and introduced through creative projects to film production. Projects briefs will give you the opportunity to develop ideas for films and undertake a range of production roles. You will learn about research enquiry, directing actors, studio and location work, running a set, interview technique, production and post-production, lighting and cinematography, sound recording and design.

In Year 2 you will undertake projects with the opportunity to shoot and process 8mm film, use archive, green screen, high-speed video and explore the intersection between live-action and animation. You will work in groups developing pitches for ambitious productions collaborating with professional actors, developing character and script, and shooting on location. Through the production of these films, you will be encouraged to identify your strengths and have the opportunity to explore specialist areas of interest.

In Year 3 you will undertake two large scale projects, culminating in the Graduation Film. You will work to your strengths and develop material for your graduation portfolio. The final Graduation Films are screened at shows on campus and at a central London cinema.

About this course

This programme encourages creative and exploratory approaches to working with the moving image. It is a single honours, full-time programme, demanding a passion and commitment to engaging fully with the filmmaking environment
The course provides a platform for you to become conceptually, technically and culturally aware. It prepares you for career paths across the ever-increasing scope of the moving image sector, especially in independent filmmaking, as film freelancers, as artists in moving image work and in more specialised, role assigned positions.
The course also offers work experience within a range of prestigious film-related environments (to selected students) and prepares you for further study at masters level.
Individual practice is emphasised and prioritised throughout the programme, along with the need to understand and participate in the work of fellow students. This gives you experience of the group dynamics through which successful films are made.
Whilst this is a conceptually driven course, it is augmented by an excellent range of technical and exploratory challenges, that will make your learning challenging and enterprising. Study on the programme culminates in a third year that is essentially a self-directed, negotiated pathway, with two main moving image projects (along with research and development) at the centre of your creative output.

You will have the opportunity to study a foreign language, free of charge, during your time at the University on a not-for-credit basis as part of the Kingston Language Scheme. Options currently include: Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

Applicants will need a minimum of 112 tariff points from recognised Level 3 qualifications to include an art or design subject such as Foundation Diploma in Art or Design or an Art/Design related A-level or recognised equivalent with a minimum of two A-levels, or equivalent; BTEC National Diploma in relevant subject.

Plus GCSE candidates are normally required to hold five GCSE subjects grades A*–C including Mathematics and English Language (or comparable numeric score under the newly reformed GCSE grading). Key Skills and Functional Skills Level 2 accepted in lieu of GCSE English and Maths.
