The MA Filmmaking programme will engage you in the production of advanced digital film products.
You will study modules in the production and technology of videography (shooting, editing, post-production), together with specialist modules in film industry practices, music video commissioning and film history and context.
Students will also be taught theoretical and historical/contextual analysis and creative processes such as visualisation and storyboarding.
Graduates of this programme will have acquired the tools of critical analysis, ideas-generation and industry understanding to go on to produce successful practical projects.
The inter-relationship between theory, creativity and practice is increasingly valued by employers, and the programme builds on a strong School tradition of integrating theory and practice.
This MA in Filmmaking will enable you to produce cinematic projects that will be technically effective whilst being strong on content.

The programme is intended to enable you to develop a deep understanding of the development and current status of the film industries and institutions, the products they make, and their audiences.

Postgraduate Certificate

  • Cinematic Language (20 credits) – core
    To enable students to develop and critically apply advanced knowledge and understanding of appropriate theories of cinematic forms and languages and engage in scholarly discourse about their discipline.
  • Independent Filmmaking (20 credits) – core
    To introduce a range of key practical considerations for advanced video production via rapid turnaround video acquisition and postproduction.
  • Film Industry Practices (20 credits) – core
    The aims of the module are to investigate film industry practices in relation to copyright, compliance and legal issues; to understand producing and commissioning; to understand how film festivals and film programming functions and to developing own submissions (where possible developed in practical modules) for relevant film festivals.

Students will be eligible to exit with the award of Postgraduate Certificate if they have successfully completed 60 credits and achieved the award learning outcomes.

Postgraduate Diploma

  • Post Production (20 credits) – core
    To enable technical proficiency in and knowledge of a range of key practical considerations in postproduction and non-linear video editing.
  • Visualization and Storyboarding (20 credits) – core
    To enable students to develop, critically apply and realise a sophisticated range of practical and conceptual approaches to storyboarding, design and the visualisation of ideas and creative concepts for use in videographic/animation projects.
  • Short Form Commissioning (20 credits) – core
    To provide an advance understanding of the industry and artist expectations for short form commissioning with a particular focus on music videos.

Students will be eligible to exit with the award of Postgraduate Diploma if they have successfully completed at least 120 credits and achieved the award learning outcomes.

Degree of Master

  • MA Project (60 credits) – core
    To enable students to extend to an advanced and professional level their study of a chosen aspect of media production through the development, production and presentation of an individual media project (print, videographic/film, photographic, web-based, video game etc.).

Students will be eligible for the award of Degree of Master if they have successfully completed 180 credits and achieved the award learning outcomes.
