Basic Section:
This Basic Importing Course for FCP X is part of the First series of training courses for FCP X. It is followed by the Second Series: “Editing in Final Cut Pro X” and the Third series: “Exporting from FCP X”.
This course is for beginners who want to learn about Importing into FCP X.
Finally, importing into FCP X: Reset the aspect ratio in FCP X should it be changed in the conversion.

  • View clips displayed by filter to hide Rejected clips, Show Favorites.
  • Change Metadata in Event Browser and Inspector, Search names and Metadata.
  • Understand the Background Task Display.

  • Understand more implications on what happens when importing clips.
  • Set Playback Preferences, Proxy media, Optimized Media, Dropped frame warnings and HDD warnings.
  • Set Editing Prefs; Trimming feedback, Position of Playhead after Edit.
  • Length of Still images on Import and Default length of Transitions.
  • Understand that multiple Events and Projects will slow up the opening of FCP and also take up more Ram during an Edit.
  • Use “Event Manager X” from Intelligent Assistance, to set up “Hidden” folders to hide Events and Projects from FCP. Organise associated Events and Projects with Colour matching.
  • Learn that Camera files, AVCHD and H264 are converted by FCP X.
  • Convert compressed files prior to import, which means less background rendering more processor power available to FCP X.
  • Use the setups to transcode using MPEG Streamclip – (Free app from the web) Batch process a number of clips and the option for de-interlacing. Import those transcoded files into FCP X and check the format in the inspector.
  • Understand how FCP X now retains In & out points. Also how to add more in & out points and remove those previously selected.
  • With little extra effort you can also use the keywords feature to retain in & out points.
  • Use the Favorites feature, to retain in & out points that overlap.
  • Re-Link event media and to understand that when re-linking a clip in an Event it is also re-linked in all of the projects that are referenced to that Event.
  • be aware that clips that are not missing can also be re-linked should a change have been made in original media.
  • Search with “Spotlight” to locate the missing clips on the HDD.
  • Use “7 to X for FCP” which allows Exports from FCP 7 as an XML file, which is then converted with “7 to X” and
