Fine Art Printmaking

Fine Art Printmaking stimulates exploration, ideas, imagination and intellectual inquiry. Its evolving position in contemporary fine art practice provides artists with a unique range of traditional processes, while embracing the challenge of the latest developments in digital technology.

On this course you will study a single discipline - printmaking - but also benefit from being part of our community of fine artists.

Course structure

Your learning experience is guided by a team of established practitioners, historians, writers and specialist technicians, and is supported by eminent and emerging visiting artists. Tutorial advice and guidance is based on your individual needs and aspirations, encouraging critical independence and self-determined studio practice. Small group seminars and student-led discussions form an important element of the learning experience. Studio practice is supported by a lecture and seminar-based Historical and Critical Studies programme.

Areas of study

Emphasis throughout is on the specialist nature of the discipline, promoting a broad definition of printmaking, including what constitutes or challenges the notion of an artist's print. The course places the practice of fine art printmaking into context, both in terms of contemporary critical issues and the wider historical perspective.

Year 1 introduces the methods and materials of the main autographic processes - etching, lithography, screen and relief printing, together with digital image generation.

In year 2 you will present work in an exhibition event and, through the extension studies programme, pursue individual interests from a range of options from across the Faculty of Arts. Some year 2 students have the opportunity for exchange study periods at overseas institutions.

Year 3 studies culminate in a final public examination/exhibition and are assessed in relation to a research essay

Career and progression opportunities

Many graduates take up art-related activities such as teaching or art administration to support their practice. The majority are both employed part-time and working freelance. A high percentage go on to postgraduate study.

Past graduates have exhibited and won prizes at Originals national printmaking competition at the Mall Galleries, London and been awarded the Glyndebourne Opera Residency.
