The course is intended to increase the confidence of learners in the use of information technology and to prepare them for progression to Second Steps in Computing.

First Steps in IT

Course Aims:
This course is aimed at learners without any computer knowledge. At the end of the course all learners will be able to use a computer to produce simple documents using Word and will have a basic knowledge of the Internet. The course is intended to increase the confidence of learners in the use of information technology and to prepare them for progression to Second Steps in Computing.

Course Content:
The course covers four main areas:

1) Introduction to computer hardware:
- identify and define the main components of a computer system, hardware & software and input & output devices

2) Introduction to Word:
- use the keyboard and mouse effectively
- create and print simple paragraphs
- use the formatting toolbar icons to effectively display a document
- insert, duplicate and manipulate clip art images in a Word document
- create, save, name, open, close, rename and delete file documents

3) Introduction to the Internet:
- search the Internet using various search engines for specified information and learners own interests
- produce printouts of search results

4) Introduction to email:
- set up an email account
- send and receive emails

Progression:
- Second Steps in Computing which has an OCR Basic Skills in Information and Communications Techology certification

Awarding Body:
OCR

Exam:
There are a number of tasks throughout the units that are used as means of continual assessment.

Qualification:
OCR Entry Level Certificate in ICT Skills For Life
