This two-day course covers DSL access techniques using ADSL/ADSL2+, TR-101, PPPoE, PPPoA, VLANs and IEEE 802 Services.  The next generation of telecommunications networks will be deployed using VoIP technology with soft switching replacing circuit switching and ISDN signalling. New access architectures must be consistent with this approach and able to deliver high speed Internet access.

The course will provide a thorough grounding in copper loop technology. It will then identify the functioning of different evolutions of ADSL from ITU G.992.1 ADSL through G.992.3 ADSL2 to G.992.5 ADSL2+. Consideration will be given to the function of the equipment in the customer premises, the impact of the loop conditions and length together with the DSL service equipment in the exchange deployed using Local Loop Unbundling.

Mechanisms and protocols used to deliver addressing at OSI Layers 2 and three will be studied including the functioning of VLANs at layer 2, Multicasting and both Layer 2 and Layer 3 and the distribution of Layer 3 (IP) addresses. The operation of PPPoA and PPPoE over the loop segment back to the Broadband Access Server and DHCP over Ethernet within the customer premises will be considered.

Finally the position of these Access services will put into the context of the evolution of next generation of telecommunications service. Delivery of Triple Play networks with IP delivered broadcast Television will require high access speeds. This course will provide an intensive study of these technologies.
