Brief Description of the Course:

This course is designed for students who wish to develop a comprehensive overview of floral design - encompassing practical techniques and technical skills within this creative field. The course provides an introduction to a range of core and specialist units to develop your creative skills.

(NB: All programmes are based on credit accumulation. Each unit of study is worth either 5 or 10 credits towards the total amount needed to achieve the qualification).

The College offers opportunity to study at level 3 (A level equivalent) for students who wish to develop a comprehensive understanding of floristry - encompassing practical techniques, academic knowledge and technical skills. It is a popular option for both school leavers and successful Level 2 Diploma students. The course incorporates a mix of practical’s, classroom lectures, industry visits and case study exercises.

For learners with 4 GCSE’s including English Language at Grade C, the Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma has 6 units (60 Credits) of study and makes up the first year of the Level 3 Diploma qualification, 12 units (120 Credits) for learners that wish to study for 1 or 2 years. Students wishing to do the Level 3 Diploma over 2 years must have 4 GCSE’s at Grade C or above including English Language and Maths or Science or another Level 2 qualification at Merit level with a Key Skill at Level 2.

Applicants with at least 5 GCSE’s at Grade C or above including English Language, Maths and Science or course specific (which could include Chemistry, Combined Science, Biology, Physics or PE etc) will be able to apply for the Level 3 Extended Diploma studied over 2 years requiring successful completion of 18 or more units (180 Credits).

Students will also receive training and assessment in a large range of additional qualifications, which will enhance their employability.

During the first year students will gain practical experience in the design and construction of assembled commercial floristry designs. This includes a range of designs for gifts, weddings and funerals.

Entry Criteria:

These courses give a good technical training and education providing a vocational alternative to A Levels and the opportunity for successful students to progress to Higher Education. Students are normally aged 16 or over and the following requirements are needed:

Advanced Level 3 Suite:

¨ Level 3 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma - (60 credits in 1 year)

4 GCSEs including English Language at Grade C or above, or a Level 2 qualification (eg First Diploma at Pass level including at least 1 key skill at level 2 in either Application of Number or Communication), or equivalent qualifications.

¨ Level 3 BTEC Diploma - (120 credits in 2 years)

4 GCSEs at Grade C or above, including at least 1 in English Language and Maths or Science or a Level 2 qualification (eg First Diploma at Merit level including at least 1 key skill at level 2 in either Application of Number or Communication), or equivalent qualifications.

¨ Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma - (180 credits in 2 years)

5 GCSEs at Grade C or above including Maths and English Language plus one course specific GCSE such as Science, Biology or PE or an Intermediate Level course (eg First Diploma at Distinction including at least 1 key skill at level 2 in either Application of Number or Communication), or equivalent qualifications.

In addition Learning Areas may apply specific agreed aptitude assessments that assist selection.

Applicants for all courses in Floristry Studies are expected to show a strong commitment to the industry and a strong personal statement. You must have an interest for Art and Design and a love for flowers. Good communication skills are paramount therefore Prior work experience in a retail environment would be an advantage.

¨ Principles of Flower and Foliage Material Conditioning and Use: This module aims to develop your understanding of the principles of flower and foliage material conditioning and use and how this is applied in practice.

¨ Practical Conditioning and Use of Flower and Foliage Materials: This module aims to develop you skills in using and conditioning flower and foliage material and how these are applied in practice.

¨ Understanding Floristry Design: This module aims to introduce you to the skills and understanding needed in floristry design and how these can be applied in practice.

¨ Undertaking Floristry Design: This module aims to introduce you to the skills and knowledge in floristry design and how these can be applied in practice.

¨ Flowering and Foliage Plants (Structures and Processes): This module aims to introduce you to the skills and understanding associated with flowering and foliage plants and how these can be applied in practice.

¨ Plan, Assemble and Evaluate Diverse Floral Designs: The aim of this module is to provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to be responsible for constructing floristry designs with medium. It covers planning, preparing materials, selecting methods and tools for the work, and constructing the floristry designs with medium. The designs and services covered by this module may be standard, adapted or customised.

¨ Plan, Assemble and Evaluate Diverse Sympathy Floristry: The aim of this module is to provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to take responsibility for planning, assembling and evaluating tied floral designs. The designs will be decorative, form linear and vegetative.

¨ Plan, Assemble and Evaluate Diverse Tied Floristry: The aim of this module is to provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to take responsibility for planning, assembling and evaluating tied floral designs. The designs will be decorative, form linear and vegetative.

¨ Undertake and Review Work Related Experience in the Land-based Industries: The aim of this module is to give you the skills needed to identify, participate in and review work experience in the environmental and land-based sector.

¨ Business Management in the Land-based Sector: You will look at the business environment, the roles and responsibilities of those employed in land-based businesses and resource requirements. You will develop your skills in business operations and produce a business plan.

¨ Undertake Retail Merchandising for the Land-based Sector: This module aims to provide you with an understanding of the principles of retail merchandising in the land-based sector and how these can be put into practice. This module has been specifically developed for 14-19 year olds in full-time education acquiring additional knowledge of retailing.

¨ Undertaking Floristry Display Techniques: This module aims to give you an understanding of floristry display techniques and how these can be applied in practice.

¨ Plan, Assemble and Evaluate Diverse Floral Wedding Designs: The aim of this module is to provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to take responsibility for planning, assembling and evaluating tied floral designs. The designs will be decorative, form linear and vegetative.

¨ Plan, Assemble and Evaluate Accessories and Novelty Designs: This module aims to introduce you to the skills and knowledge in needed to plan, assemble and execute accessories and novelty designs and how these can be applied in practice.

¨ Plan, Assemble and Evaluate Diverse Cultural Floristry Designs: This module aims to introduce you to the skills and knowledge needed to plan, assemble and evaluate diverse cultural floristry designs and how these can be applied in practice.

¨ Applying Trends in the Floristry Industry: This module aims to introduce you to the skills and understanding needed to recognise and identify trends in floristry and how these can be applied in practice.

¨ Understanding Historical Floristry Designs: This module aims to give you an understanding of the principles of historical floristry design and how these can be applied in practice.

¨ Photography Media, Techniques and Technology: This module aims to introduce you to the skills and knowledge associated with photography media, techniques and technology and how these can be applied in practice.

¨ Issues and Legislation in Floristry: This module aims to introduce you to the skills and knowledge in issues and legislation in floristry and how these can be applied in practice.

Assessments:

Assessments will include assignments, practical displays, presentations and reports. There are no formal examinations on the Level 3 BTEC Diploma.

Possible Careers / Jobs:

Employment opportunities in Floristry and its related industries are currently very good. The Subsidiary, Diploma and Extended Diploma in Floristry provide the qualification and experience for entry into the industry at an operational level with future prospects for management. Possible jobs include working in a florist, contract work and demonstrating.

Progression:

As a course equivalent to A Level the Level 3 BTEC Diploma is an ideal spring board for progression to a Foundation Degree or Full Degree depending on UCAS points gained.

Additional Qualifications:

Students will do a range of additional qualifications to support their work in the creative industries.

Special Requirements:

1 Specialist Clothing and Equipment: Students must provide their own protective apron, waterproof jacket, suitable footwear and full tool kit. (further details provided on enrolment) A good camera is also required and a range of art materials.

2 Extra Costs: Excursion trips – in the region of £200, depending on the number of excursions undertaken, these may range from trips to local wholesalers, national flowers shows and exhibitions to international excursions e.g. Holland to visit flower markets and shows. Additional flowers and ancillary decorative items may be purchased at the student’s discretion.
