Course programme

This course is a practical introduction to the basic methods and techniques of period and theatrical millinery and the interpretation of hat design for film and theatre production.

The course covers the construction of historical hat making up to the twentieth century. Following on from the basic techniques of sewing straw plait, students will learn pattern cutting and make up a nineteenth century bonnet or hat. More experienced students can move onto making hats from original shapes they have not tackled before. Participants will develop their own skills to produce at least one, or more finished pieces by the end of the course.
