Why choose this course? The Football Coaching and the Performance Specialist degree is an innovative programme which integrates football coaching awards into an academic course.    The degree is designed in partnership with the Football Association of Wales (FAW) to prepare students who want to work as a coach or performance specialist (Physiologist, Psychologist, Performance Analyst or Development Officer) in the world of football. Students on the programme will develop practical coaching skills in addition to developing an understanding of the application of sport science (physiology, psychology, performance analysis) and the social context of the sport of football.   Students on the programme will work towards the Football Association of Wales (FAW) Level 2 (UEFA C) and Level 3 (UEFA B) coaching Licenses. Students completing the programme will develop the skill to work with youth and senior football teams at grassroots and a high performance level.

Course programme

  • Students will work towards Football Association of Wales Level 2 (UEFA C) and Level 3 (UEFA B) coaching Licenses.
  • The dynamic lecture environment will support and challenge students to engage with all aspects of the coaching process including hands on practical coaching, physiology, psychology, performance analysis and coaching pedagogy.

The degree programme will enable students to develop practical coaching skills and an understanding the coaching process at a youth and senior level. Additionally students will development an understanding of the extended elements of the coaching process which includes how individual players and teams are prepared physiologically and psychologically to participate in football. Throughout the degree process students will develop the reflective skills to personalise their own learn to prepare them for future careers.

During the course you will cover performance analysis, sports psychology, physiology, skill development, reflective practice, coaching pedagogy, coaching procedures and practices. In addition to the development of personal, professional and academic skills which are essential to work in the football industry.

Modules are taught on a weekly basis and allows the students to link academic theory to football practice. As the student progresses through the degree they develop the personal, professional and academic skills required to personalise their learning to match future career ambitions.

FOUNDATION YEAR ONLY (LEVEL 3)


Students entering the degree programme BSc (Hons) Football Coaching and the Performance Specialist at the foundation level will develop an understanding of the coaching process, practical coaching skills and sports science disciplines. Students will develop practitioner and academic skills which will enable them to transfer their newly gained knowledge of coaching and coaching science into the sport of football. Students will also engage with Football Association of Wales Level 1 (leaders) coaching award. Students who achieve 120 Level 3 credits will progress onto the BSc (Hons) Football Coaching and the Performance Specialist degree.

Year 1 (Level 4)

In the first year students will be introduced to all elements of the coaching process. Student will gain an understanding of a range of disciplines including practical coaching skills, sport psychology, physiology, performance analysis, coaching processes and personal and academic skills. Students will also engage with Football Association of Wales Level 2 (UEFA C) coaching Licenses.

Year 2 (Level 5)

Students in year two are encouraged to personalise their learning in context of future career ambitions. Students will develop a strong understanding of the link between football theory and the transference of this knowledge into practice. This enables students to develop vocationally relevant skills.

Students will also work towards Football Association of Wales Level 3 (UEFA B) coaching Licenses.

Year 3 (Level 6)

In the final year students will continue to develop their knowledge of the coaching process and develop a specialism within the sport of football. The development of a subject specialism within the context of football enables students to develop personal and professional skills which are essential for employment within the world of football.

Students will continue to work towards Football Association of Wales Level 3 (UEFA B) coaching Licenses.
