This course is designed to help you build a career as a forensic psychologist or to work in a complementary sector, such as the police force, drug rehabilitation or legal services. It is one of only a few degrees in the UK offering a specialist forensic psychology qualification.

The course focuses on the psychological aspects of criminal investigations, the psychology of offending behaviour, and the connections between mental disorders and offending behaviours. The course combines theoretical and practical approaches central to the investigative process. You will learn about the reasons for assessing risk and analyse the validity of instruments used.
This course has been accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). Graduates are eligible for graduate membership of the BPS and the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, which is the first step towards becoming a chartered psychologist. With further training, this can lead to a career in forensic psychology.

About this course

• You will be eligible for membership to the British Psychological Society, on completion of your degree.

• You will have access to our purpose-built laboratories, which offer computer facilities and technical support.

• You have the opportunity to undertake work-based practice or observation in your final year to enhance your employment opportunities.

• The course benefits from an excellent range of staff expertise and close links with forensic settings located in and around southwest London.

• In Year 2, subject to availability and academic performance, you will have the chance to study abroad and still complete your degree in three years. Our students have studied in Europe, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Studying abroad helps students to become more effective, independent learners, and provides the opportunity for new experiences in different parts of the world.

This degree suits a career in criminological and forensic psychology by offering progression to a postgraduate BPS-approved forensic psychology MSc. It also offers skills relevant to: teaching; probation service; youth offending teams; police work; government research and development. For postgraduate study, Kingston offers an MA in Criminology and an MSc in Forensic Psychology.

You will be given professional/expert support to develop your CV in your first year, so that you can further extend it in subsequent years. Additional activities include writing difference materials such as short (200-500 words) essays aimed at different audiences (practice of different linguistic and stylistic formats of expression in psychology) and oral presentations (practice of interview skills).

120 UCAS points.
Units: to include two A-levels or equivalent.
Subjects: A-level Psychology is not essential but must be passed (A*–C) if taken.
Plus GCSE: candidates are normally required to hold five GCSE subjects grades A*-C including Mathematics and English Language (or comparable numeric score under the newly reformed GCSE grading).

This programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society as conferring eligibility for Graduate Membership of the Society with the Graduate Basis for Registration, provided the minimum standard of qualification of second class honours is achieved. This is the first step towards becoming a chartered psychologist and (with further training) can lead to a career in forensic psychology.
