This is a one year course run at Brinsbury, the countryside campus of Chichester College. The forestry & arboriculture course consists of practical units such as climbing, felling and chainsaw maintenance and use and theory units in silviculture, business and work experience. The course uses the estate at Brinsbury and other sites locally for training. You need to be fit but will enjoy the teamwork and practical tasks.The course will be run over two full days per week.

Course programme

What you need to know
How will I study?

If you are a full time student aged 16-18 you will follow a study programme which will consist of your main course, enterprise and enrichment activities, English and maths as well as work experience. You will learn how to climb trees safely with your chainsaw equipment, undertake chainsaw maintenance and the safe use of chainsaws. You will also learn the art of felling trees, undertake ground level operations and estate maintenance. You will gain the underpinning knowledge and training to undertake the various NPTC assessments in the use of chainsaws (there is a separate charge for the assessments).
How will I be taught?

By a combination of theory (35%) and practical training. Classroom activities will make full use of digital technology and practicals will be in realistic work environments, all of which will be fully supervised and health and safety checked.
How will I be assessed?

By a range of assessment techniques including practical assessment, written work and projects.
