It is a mix of practical work and the underpinning knowledge required for the maintenance industry.  The course is designed for learners who would like to progress to a Diploma course in any construction craft or trade area.

Please note:

Maths and English are an integral part of this course.

What modules are covered?

This course is a mix of practical work and the underpinning knowledge required for the maintenance industry.  You will also cover functional skills in Maths and English.

Modules covered will inlcude:

Basic Construction Methods

Introduction to Plumbing

Introduction to Electrical 

What qualifications will I get?

Level 1 Diploma in Basic Construction Skills

How will I be assessed?

Theoretical as well as practical skills will be taught and developed to suit the needs of the candidate and the requirements of the awarding body.

Method of Assessment:

Completion of practical training projects and assessments

Written knowledge evidence tests

Oral questionning

Assignments 

What is the entry process?

This course is a referral course intended for those who do not meet the entry criteria to be accepted onto a construction craft or trade course.

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum qualifications: Entry Level

Grade E or above in English and Maths

Reference or report from previous school

Successful interview

Initial screening to identify appropriate course

Attendance: Up to 4 days per week

English and Maths

English and maths qualifications are vitally important for future employers and universities, so the government has made it a priority for students to improve these skills.

Entry Level / Level 1 and Level 2: We’re here to help you on your journey, so if you do not achieve grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths, then you will study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

Students who achieve a D grade will be placed on the relevant GCSE programme, while students who achieve an E or below will be assessed to ensure they are placed on the right study programme for their ability.

Level 3 programmes: You will need to meet the course entry requirements specified on the course information above. For the majority of our Level 3 courses, students will need grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths. If this is not specified in the course entry requirement, then you may be able to study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

What can I do after this course?

A typical opening would be working for a maintenance company or a general builder covering a variety of work within the construction sector or maintenance departments within the public sector.

Further study opportunities include progression to one of the specialised construction areas such as plumbing or electrical.

Course tuition fees are free for UK students under 19yrs.

All students may be charged for materials e.g. equipment, clothing etc.
